David Carr, Alex Smith. Who has had a better career?

David Carr, Alex Smith. Who has had a better career?

well i wanna be the one to start the smith v. carr debate

carr has never had an offensive line and still has put up better ratings than alex smith and is not injury prone even though he has every excuse to be

A year ago i would say Carr is better. But Smith played well last year. Well enough to be ranked higher than Carr. Carr hasn't done anything in years.

Lets look at the first five seasons for both players since Carr has been a backup and rarely played the last three seasons.

Rookie season qb rating:

Smith: 40.8 (started 7 games)

Carr: 62.8 (started all 16 games as a rookie. Led the Texans past Dallas in his first game). Lucky to have survived his rookie season after getting sacked 76 times and hit all game every game.

After Five seasons:

Carr had qb ratings of 62.8, 69.5, 83.5, 77.2, 82.1

62.8 (sacked 76 times)

69.5 (sacked 15 times- he missed 5 games due to injury)

83.5 (sacked 49 times)

77.2 (sacked 68 times)

82.1 (sacked 41 times) This was the 2006 season and his final year as a starter for the Texans.

##################################################

In Alex Smith's first five seasons his qb ratings were:

40.8 (sacked 29 times. He started 7 games but played in 9)

74.8 (sacked 35 times. He started all 16 games. Niners had one of the top running games that season.)

57.2 (sacked 17 times. Played like dog poo for 7 games before getting injured and missing the rest of the season.

0 (He lost the training camp competition to journeyman qbs JT Osullivan and Shaun Hill. Shortly before season started he re-injured his shoulder and was done for the year).

81.5 (sacked 22 times. Started 10 games. Choked in nearly every "big" game of the season. Example: Against Philly his qb rating was in the 40's. Against the Cardinals (late season rematch) his qb rating was in the 50's. Niners were embrassed by Philly but managed to beat Arizona thanks to 7 turnovers.

###################################################

I think both qbs are mediocre but must admit I'm interested to see what Carr can do when he's not playing behind a crap O-line.

you make good points, but I believe Smith only played in 3 games in 2007 before getting injured, though he came back later and tried to make a go of it and was clearly not right.

His stat sheet on nfl.com shows him starting seven games during the 2007 season. I think he got hurt after 6 games and the 7th start was later in the year when he tried to comeback.

he was hurt after attempting one pass in the Seattle game, which was the fourth game of the season. We were 2-1 at that point.

His record has him starting 7 games that season. Looks like he came back midseason and started a few games before ending his year against the Seahawks in week 10. I wonder how much more time Smith would have missed playing behind that Houston O-line that allowed Carr to get sacked 75+ times.

When did Smith play well last season? Which games?

The Titans game when he threw multiple picks late in the 4th qtr when a win was within reach?

The Bears game when he couldn't lead this offense anywhere even though the defenses basically gave us 10 points (by giving niners the ball twice deep in bears territory).

Or maybe the Philly game (qb rating in the 40's)

The rematch against Arizona? qb rating in the 50's (we won thanks to 7 turnovers.

Greenbay? His god awful first half and interception near our own goal-line early in the 2nd half was the difference in the game.

Oh, but he sure looked so-so against the Rams and Lions!!!

Hell, even in the games some people point to as evidence of how great Smith is (Texans game, Colts game) he finished both games poorly. Against the Texans the niners final drive ended with a Smith interception. On the Niners final drive against the Colts Smith threw back to back incomplete passes and was sacked on 3rd down. Niners punted and never got ball back.

Smith was never good when playing against decent teams. He never played great period. He plays just okay against mediocre teams. I bet most qbs wish they could end the season playing against two of the worst teams in the NFL (Rams,Lions).

Smith is a mediocre qb and hasn't earned a damn thing. He sure as hell hasn't earned the right to be the unquestioned starter for next season.

what do you think? Carr is applying to be Smith's backup right now.

You go by strictly numbers, as a few do on here, Carr looks to be the better QB. I smell a controversy brewing.

While I do not think there should be a QB competition, Smith needs to be on a tight leash, like Hill was last year... They have comparable stats, and have each had equally horrible entries into the NFL. One stat still sticks out... Smith threw one touchdown in 2005, and that was against the texans, I believe. Carr threw 9, even with 76 sacks...

Regardless, Raye still has his inadequecies (sp?), therefore that will be the major downfall of our offense. Much as I do not expect Smith to suddenly turn over a new leaf, I do not expect Raye to ever have a good offense... My question is, Carr is a FA and has 4-5 teams asking for his services, how many would do so with Smith?

Carr > Smith
You can bet that Singletary promised Carr the opportunity to compete for the starting job no matter who enters camp as the starter. Otherwise Carr wouldn't be here. This isn't a case of a player just happy to have a job. Carr had other suitors and his most recent team (Giants) wanted him back. He signed with the Niners because it's his best opportunity to be a starter again. The extended negotiations no doubt involved setting up Carr's contract to pay him more if he wins the starting job.
smith had a lot more things going against him and he looks to be getting better. carr hit a wall and stopped. Smith will be even better this year when he and the WR's are on the same page. timing and continuity are a big deal, and he finally gets that this year.
