IMO Smith had more difficulties/obsticles that has blocked his progress than the average #1 pick.
That being said I don't know to much about why Carr was never/has yet been able to succeed.

I don't remember much about Carr either except that he got sacked A LOT in Houston

Those numbers from Smith are from this past year when he only started 10 games.

Prior to this last season, I argued a lot that Carr had better production. I think that Alex passed Carr this past season.
But seriously, they both are really really bad quarterbacks. And it's sad that the 49ers are reduced to picking between scrubs like Carr and Smith.

Right, because Carr never faced obstacles playing for an expansion team.

This thread could get ugly fast. They both haven't met expectations, but were both selected by very bad teams with a very bad pool of talent at that time.
But if you ask me who has better upside, I would say Alex because he is a starting QB right now. But I still think Carr could be a better back up than Hill. I would trust what we could do with his arm if he had to step for 2-4 games if there was an injury.

Look at the Smith bandwagon come out touting the "support Alex Smith" t-shirts and "Alex is our savior" posters !
Both are BUSTS. Fine, if you think that Smith's half season worth of play erases all bad memories of him and puts him on par with some of the greats in this league (after all, didnt many of you give him a "B" rating while giving Manning, Brees, and Favre an "A"), then all the power to you.
But unless he can show a miraculous turnaround this season, he goes down (in most pundits books) as a bust next to the likes of Tim Couch, Ryan Leaf, and Akili Smith.

While this could be true...this season is the decider for Smith. That isn't to say opinions have not been made already and that they cannot be right or wrong. However, to give a player a fair shot (any player at that) they have to be given a fair amount of quality opportunity. This season Smith will have 1) The same system and coaches from the previous season, 2) An entire offseason to train and practice with that consistency from the year before as the starting QB, 3) Will have weapons and hopefully an NFL quality offensive line. If he cannot be a top 15 QB in the league this year then he is DONE. Until then...the FINAL grade really hasn't come yet.
I think McCloughan's hope in all of this David Carr stuff is that if Smith doesn't pan out Nate Davis will have been able to learn from talented, experienced QB's (not necessarily good QB's) for 2 years. Learning a playbook and developing slowly. He would probably be given the shot for 2011 with David Carr as his back-up (of course there would probably be a "QB summer competition"). Either way...Smith wins over the Franchise and fans this year or it's Nate Davis' job to lose next offseason.
