That being said I don't know to much about why Carr was never/has yet been able to succeed.

I don't remember much about Carr either except that he got sacked A LOT in Houston

unfortunately for carr is when that expansion team started they landed tony boselli from jax and during offseason training or preseason he landed a career ending injury! he was one of if not the tops at tackle and well, there are the sacks ha ha! he never gets hurt davids chances are he has a better career! but thats all hypothetical after the injury of course teeeoh lol

Actually he was damaged goods before ever going to the Texans. Thats why he was available in the expansion draft to begin with.

He was selected first over all in the draft by an expansion team.

what do you think? Carr is applying to be Smith's backup right now.
Didn't carr have Johnson for a little. Both had horrible OL's so the running game and passing games never really panned out although Gore kicks ass. Smith is a little more mobile and accurate so i would say Smith is the better of the qb's but Carr is not as bad as some people say.

he's talking about Tony Boselli
Lets look at the first five seasons for both players since Carr has been a backup and rarely played the last three seasons.

Rookie season qb rating:

Smith: 40.8 (started 7 games)

Carr: 62.8 (started all 16 games as a rookie. Led the Texans past Dallas in his first game). Lucky to have survived his rookie season after getting sacked 76 times and hit all game every game.

After Five seasons:

Carr had qb ratings of 62.8, 69.5, 83.5, 77.2, 82.1

62.8 (sacked 76 times)

69.5 (sacked 15 times- he missed 5 games due to injury)

83.5 (sacked 49 times)

77.2 (sacked 68 times)

82.1 (sacked 41 times) This was the 2006 season and his final year as a starter for the Texans.

##################################################

In Alex Smith's first five seasons his qb ratings were:

40.8 (sacked 29 times. He started 7 games but played in 9)

74.8 (sacked 35 times. He started all 16 games. Niners had one of the top running games that season.)

57.2 (sacked 17 times. Played like dog poo for 7 games before getting injured and missing the rest of the season.

0 (He lost the training camp competition to journeyman qbs JT Osullivan and Shaun Hill. Shortly before season started he re-injured his shoulder and was done for the year).

81.5 (sacked 22 times. Started 10 games. Choked in nearly every "big" game of the season. Example: Against Philly his qb rating was in the 40's. Against the Cardinals (late season rematch) his qb rating was in the 50's. Niners were embrassed by Philly but managed to beat Arizona thanks to 7 turnovers.

###################################################

I think both qbs are mediocre but must admit I'm interested to see what Carr can do when he's not playing behind a crap O-line.
Do fans around here really think that David Carr is considering trading his role as a backup for the Giants (they want him to return) to being a backup for the Niners??? There is NO WAY that David Carr signs with the Niners unless he's promised a fair shot to at least compete for the starting job. I would imagine that's also holding up negotiations with Carr's agent wanting the contract to have clauses that reward Carr should he at any point win the starting job. If the Niners had told him that Alex Smith is the unquestioned starter and that Carr would only compete for the #2 spot then it's doubtful Carr would have even made the trip to Niners head qtrs.

I see what you're saying, but one thing comes to my mind. Most likely Carr wouldn't be to step into the game unless Manning gets hurt. Whereas, with the Niners, there's a possibility that he may step in if Alex Smith should stumble in the first few games of the season. Look what happened with Hill last year. Did enough to get a few wins, but got tossed aside for Smith after losing a few games in a row.

If you're trying to make teams look at you, what would you do? Stay with a team as most likely just a back-up, or play for a team where you have a good chance of stepping in by week 6 or 8 as the starter?

If we're going to be playing the QB competition with David Carr we might as well just go and trade for a guy like McNabb dude. I'm not even for trading for McNabb but come on, David FREAKING Carr? Either give Smith the reps to give him one last chance after a respectable last year or move on completely and get someone who can get you to the playoffs(which IDK if McNabb even could considering he's getting older, worse, and would be playing with a worse line and without a speedster like DJax and he can't run as well as he could when he had no WRs). Really we shouldn't sign Carr but if we do he should be the back up until Smith f**ks up this year, not taking away half the goddamn snaps. Even Patrick Willis said that we have 3 QBs better than him, so who do you honestly think is better?

Oh I see, I guess I should read first. The Texans offensive line was a joke and still needs improvement.

you make good points, but I believe Smith only played in 3 games in 2007 before getting injured, though he came back later and tried to make a go of it and was clearly not right.

His stat sheet on nfl.com shows him starting seven games during the 2007 season. I think he got hurt after 6 games and the 7th start was later in the year when he tried to comeback.

he was hurt after attempting one pass in the Seattle game, which was the fourth game of the season. We were 2-1 at that point.
