Andy Benoit of Sports Illustrated sat down and reviewed the game film of Sunday's San Francisco 49ers loss to the Carolina Panthers. Below are some observations that the NFL analyst and staff writer made regarding the 49ers.
#49ers #Panthers Film: Bowman excellent Cover 3 play on ball to create Bethea INT on game's first throw.
— Andy Benoit (@Andy_Benoit) September 20, 2016
Film: #49ers one of the very few true 3-4 defenses in NFL. (Most 3-4's are 4-3's with OLBs placed just tad differently.)
— Andy Benoit (@Andy_Benoit) September 20, 2016
#Panthers Film: #49ers on 3rd-22 brought overload blitz with rotation to Quarters behind it. Underneath defenders matched up....
— Andy Benoit (@Andy_Benoit) September 20, 2016
cont.....TE Olsen beat Bowman on out-n-up, but Newton overthrew it.
— Andy Benoit (@Andy_Benoit) September 20, 2016
#49ers #Panthers Film: Bethea blew routine Cover 4 on Olsen 78-yd TD. Olsen inside slot seam route from spread empty.
— Andy Benoit (@Andy_Benoit) September 20, 2016
Film: #49ers a lot of gap exchanges in base D on early downs, often involving LBs. A "moving pieces" front seven.
— Andy Benoit (@Andy_Benoit) September 20, 2016
Film: #49ers D very diverse with their fronts. Far from being only a 3-4.
— Andy Benoit (@Andy_Benoit) September 20, 2016
Film: #49ers DC O'Neil very diverse with 2nd down calls. A lot of pressure and gap exchange concepts.
— Andy Benoit (@Andy_Benoit) September 20, 2016
#49ers Film: Whittaker 25 yds great ex. of how all the moving parts of #Panthers run game impact LBs over time. Bowman hesitant on this play
— Andy Benoit (@Andy_Benoit) September 20, 2016
#49ers Film: #Panthers like in WK 1 showed QB draw in 2:00. Newton 16 yds vs. man-free-lurk (lurker Reid played it poorly).
— Andy Benoit (@Andy_Benoit) September 20, 2016
#49ers Film: DeForest Buckner a lot to learn RE: setting up pass blockers. He's just a body in the pass rush at this point.
— Andy Benoit (@Andy_Benoit) September 20, 2016
Film: #49ers do a lot with locking the seam in their zone coverages. They're not a landmark zone D.
— Andy Benoit (@Andy_Benoit) September 20, 2016
#Panthers #49ers Film: Benjamin 25 yds was tight X-iso vs. Ward man coverage in Cover 0 blitz on 3rd-7. Ward gave Benjamin the inside.
— Andy Benoit (@Andy_Benoit) September 20, 2016
#Panthers #49ers Film: Benjamin 10-yd TD again tight X-iso vs. Ward. This time Quarters coverage, Benjamin won easily with gradual out route
— Andy Benoit (@Andy_Benoit) September 20, 2016
#49ers #Panthers Film: Ward travelled with Benjamin and, overall, did not play poorly. Had a bad sequence in 3rd qtr.
— Andy Benoit (@Andy_Benoit) September 20, 2016
Film: Based on how they're used, #49ers view Brock as their speedier, agile CB and Ward as their more physical one.
— Andy Benoit (@Andy_Benoit) September 20, 2016
#Panthers #49ers Film: Benjamin got Ward again for 9-yd TD. PA slant from trips slot. Benjamin size a big plus.
— Andy Benoit (@Andy_Benoit) September 20, 2016
Benoit went on to say that he thinks CB Jimmie Ward had a tough outing against the bigger WR Kelvin Benjamin, but that he believes he is fine. Benoit called Ward a physical and versatile cornerback.
#49ers #Panthers Film: Gabbert showed some anticipation on Kerley 12 yds and Torrey Smith 20 yds along field numbers.
— Andy Benoit (@Andy_Benoit) September 21, 2016
Film: read-option was foundational for #49ers. Snaps optioning off playside DE and backside DT.
— Andy Benoit (@Andy_Benoit) September 21, 2016
#49ers #Panthers Film: Smith 28-yd TD was post vs. Quarters CB Bradberry. TE route occupied the help safety.
— Andy Benoit (@Andy_Benoit) September 21, 2016
#49ers Film: when Gabbert is comfortable, the ball comes out of his hand very well. An above avg. pure thrower.
— Andy Benoit (@Andy_Benoit) September 21, 2016
#49ers Film: on Celek 12 yds Gabbert panicked in the pocket and created pressure, leaving a 30+ yarder on the field.
— Andy Benoit (@Andy_Benoit) September 21, 2016
#49ers Film: RG Tiller plus size but not a great athlete. That can be a problem in Kelly's run game.
— Andy Benoit (@Andy_Benoit) September 21, 2016
#49ers #Panthers Film: Martin came in for Tiller at RG and got beat inside for sack by Lotulelei.
— Andy Benoit (@Andy_Benoit) September 21, 2016
#49ers Film: #Panthers very, very little man coverage this game.
— Andy Benoit (@Andy_Benoit) September 21, 2016
#49ers Film: McDonald 75-yd TD was 2x2 LOS TE corner route as part of combo called specifically....
— Andy Benoit (@Andy_Benoit) September 21, 2016
cont... to beat the 3-over, 3-under zone that Panthers had been playing on majority of snaps.
— Andy Benoit (@Andy_Benoit) September 21, 2016
#49ers Film: next play McDonald dropped a tremendous middle field zone void throw by Gabbert over Kuechly that had beat #Panthers Cover 6.
— Andy Benoit (@Andy_Benoit) September 21, 2016
#Panthers #49ers Film: Kuechly INT was on simple hook-curl zone D. If he hadn't gotten it McClain would have. Gabbert locked in on the throw
— Andy Benoit (@Andy_Benoit) September 21, 2016
#49ers Film: Torrey Smith is not good at the top of routes. Bradberry beat him soundly here a number of times, including on INT at end.
