Baalke confirms interest in Briggs, Foster, Spikes and Henderson

Mar 24, 2015 at 9:09 AM--

San Francisco 49ers general manager Trent Baalke has confirmed the team's interest in linebackers Lance Briggs, Mason Foster, Brandon Spikes, and Erin Henderson. He also stated that no visit with Henderson has been scheduled.

The 49ers are looking to add some bodies to their linebacker corps after the surprise retirements of linebacker Patrick Willis and the man who would have been his replacement, Chris Borland. NaVorro Bowman is attempting to return to the field after suffering a devastating injury in January of last year.

The team decided to keep Ahmad Brooks rather than make him a post-June 1 cut, but head coach Jim Tomsula has said that there are no plans to move him inside at this point.

The 49ers will also have another opportunity to add some younger talent to the position in the NFL Draft which begins on April 30th. The team scheduled a visit with inside linebacker Benardrick McKinney of Mississippi State. For complete draft coverage, visit our 2015 Draft War Room.

Trey Lance is among the San Francisco 49ers players still dealing with an injury. The rookie quarterback suffered a chipped bone in the index finger of his throwing hand during the team's preseason finale against the Las Vegas Raiders on August 29. Lance will be limited today, but head coach Kyle Shanahan hopes the rookie can get a little more work in as the team prepares for its regular-season opener against the Detroit Lions. The coach was asked if Lance can take snaps and throw the football now. He wasn't doing so during Monday's practice. "I think so," Shanahan responded. "Yeah, we'll see out there today. But yeah, he should be able to do everything. We'll see how he feels when he does it, though." Lance was later shown throwing

The San Francisco 49ers feared their starting cornerback, Jason Verrett, suffered a torn ACL during Sunday's 41-33 victory over the Detroit Lions. Head coach Kyle Shanahan jumped on a conference call this afternoon with the media and revealed that an MRI later confirmed their fears. Verrett indeed suffered the season-ending injury and will land on injured reserve for the sixth time in eight seasons. "It's crushing," Shanahan said yesterday after the game. "... You know the bad luck he's had, and putting together these last two years, staying healthy, how good of a camp he had. We've got a lot of love for J.V. and respect him as much as anyone I've ever been around, so I really hurt for him." Shanahan spoke with Verrett a lot last night, and the

Head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch have insisted that the San Francisco 49ers were interested in Trey Lance since they started scouting this year's rookie quarterback class. For Shanahan, that process started in January after last season ended. The 49ers traded up to the No. 3 overall pick and eventually selected Lance despite most in the media and around the league believing that the target was Mac Jones of Alabama. The 49ers insist that Lance was always the player to beat in their minds. He was the one for whom they made the trade. ESPN's Adam Schefter disputed that
