Last week, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy moved into the top spot in Nick Shook's NFL.com quarterback rankings. Purdy made a remarkable climb, starting the season ranked No. 15.
After a gritty Week 4 win over the Denver Broncos, Purdy held on to the No. 1 spot as the NFL heads into Week 5. For the 49ers, that means a tough NFC West clash with the reigning Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks, who will look to knock San Francisco from the ranks of the league's unbeaten teams.
Purdy completed 63.3 percent of his passes against the Broncos for 218 yards and two touchdowns, finishing with a 107.4 passer rating.
"Brock Purdy maintains his spot atop the throne despite encountering a greater challenge in Week 4," Shook wrote. "He still managed to overcome the resistance generated by Denver's defense. His touchdown pass to Deebo Samuel was a great example of a quarterback sensing the moment to bail without committing prematurely to running, a play that less experienced (and less composed) QBs won't make in most cases."
Purdy remains on pace to match or surpass the franchise-record 4,280 passing yards he threw for in 2023. Through four games, he has passed for 1,007 yards and 11 touchdowns while adding 122 rushing yards and a touchdown on 20 carries.
His lone interception of the season came in Week 1, and the 49ers' offensive line has yet to allow a sack.
Purdy is one of five quarterbacks in Shook's Tier 1. The others are Dak Prescott, Patrick Mahomes, Trevor Lawrence, and Josh Allen.
With the 49ers sitting at 4-0, Purdy will have another opportunity to prove he belongs atop the quarterback rankings when San Francisco travels to Seattle to face its division rival, the team that ended its season in the playoffs last year.
