The biggest offensive acquisition for the San Francisco 49ers this offseason was Mike Evans, the longtime Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver. He's expected to make a significant impact, potentially providing quarterback Brock Purdy with the best boundary target and red-zone weapon of his career.
Twelve-time Pro Bowl left tackle Trent Williams has called Evans a first-ballot Hall of Famer, and he believes the veteran wide receiver can take the 49ers' offense to the next level in 2026.
"I think Mike Evans is going to be the biggest benefactor for us," Williams recently told ESPN's Dan Graziano. "Just because you can't have your safeties keyed in on filling the gaps. Because you can't leave him 50-50, you can't leave him one-on-one. And that's the one thing that this offense, in my opinion, didn't do as much, was attack downfield."
Evans joins a revamped 49ers wide receiver room that recently lost Ricky Pearsall for the season. Pearsall was expected to start opposite the longtime veteran. However, the team also brought back Deebo Samuel and added Christian Kirk, while young receivers such as Jordan Watkins and Jacob Cowing remain developmental options.
Several of the 49ers' receivers, including Evans, have dealt with injuries during training camp, but none appear to be long-term concerns aside from Pearsall's injury.
Williams is excited to see what the new-look group can accomplish. He believes Evans will command the attention of two defenders, while his size (6-5, 231) gives him a significant advantage when competing for 50-50 balls. His ability to attack downfield could also open up opportunities for the rest of the 49ers' offense.
"Now, with the receiver room we have, and having the threats we have, I don't know if you can just have everybody zero in on Christian [McCaffrey]," Williams said.
The 49ers also used their top draft pick on De'Zhaun Stribling, who has impressed during training camp and could be working his way toward a significant role as a rookie. Williams is high on the first-year wide receiver, too.
"He's going to be a player. I promise you that," Williams said of Stribling. "He's like Jauan [Jennings], same body type, but he runs 4.3. And his 4.3 speed shows in the game. His acceleration, it shows every time he touches the ball. And I think he's going to be a guy who, early, he'll get off fast when people aren't planning on stopping him and stuff, and then once he's jotted down as a real threat, then it opens up everything else, too."
The 49ers' receiver room has undergone significant changes heading into 2026, and Williams believes the combination of Evans' size and experience and Stribling's speed and explosiveness can create new opportunities throughout the offense.
