The San Francisco 49ers, in preparation for their Sunday matchup against the New England Patriots, have announced the following roster moves:

  • Promoted DE Sam Okuayinonu to the active roster
  • Elevated DT Evan Anderson (standard elevation)
  • Elevated S Jaylen Mahoney (standard elevation)
  • Placed DT Javon Hargrave on IR (injured reserve)
  • Placed LB Curtis Robinson on IR

Okuayinonu is being signed to the active roster. Last week, against the Los Angeles Rams, Okuayinonu recorded his first NFL sack. He came into the game with a half-sack from 2022 when he was with the Tennessee Titans. Sunday will be Okuayinonu's third game to be active this season.

Anderson, an undrafted rookie, is being elevated for the first time in his career. With Hargrave going on IR, and DT Jordan Elliot dealing with an injury, the 49ers defensive line is thin, and needs help, especially in stopping the run. Anderson is a big body capable of occupying blockers.

Mahoney is also an undrafted rookie who is being elevated for the first time. With starting safety, Talanoa Hufanga, listed as questionable with an ankle injury, Mahoney may be needed for safety depth. His elevation could signify that the coaches believe Hufanga may not be able to play on Sunday. Mahoney and Anderson will both return to the practice squad on Monday.

Hargrave had perhaps his best game with the 49ers last Sunday against the Rams. During the game, Hargrave tore his triceps. He could miss the rest of the season, although there is a chance he could return for the playoffs.

Robinson is a player the fanbase was hoping to see on the field soon. But a knee injury sustained in practice this week will likely end his season. He is scheduled for surgery to repair his torn ACL.

In other news, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero is reporting that the "NFL fined the Los Angeles Rams organization $100,000 for an incident after the final play last week, in which an inactive player shoved 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk, per sources. Derion Kendrick, who is on IR, was fined $5,656 for unsportsmanlike conduct. Kamren Kinchens was fined $5,653."

In addition, two other Rams players, Christian Rozeboom and Byron Young were fined for roughness penalties. The 49ers look to bounce back against the Patriots after losing their last two games.
