In the midst of NFL Combine week, The Athletic's NFL insider Dianna Russini casually dropped a nugget that the San Francisco 49ers' were interested in Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo for their own defensive coordinator role.

The Chiefs signed Spagnuolo to an extension just days after the Super Bowl. That quick turnaround was perhaps inspired by the 49ers' pursuit.

"San Francisco was flirting with him, thinking about bringing him in as DC," Russini said on "The Athletic Football Show" podcast.

The 49ers have yet to fill their defensive coordinator role but have been reportedly interviewed former Chargers head coach Brandon Staley, 49ers defensive passing game/nickels coach Nick Sorensen, 49ers defensive backs coach Daniel Bullocks, and most recently reported, Chiefs defensive backs coach Dave Merritt.

49ers analysis: The pros and cons of a Brandon Aiyuk extension

By Al Sacco
Apr 12

John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan have made it clear that they want WR Brandon Aiyuk to be a part of the San Francisco 49ers for the foreseeable future. It appears Aiyuk also wants to get something done, but all indications are that he isn't willing to take a hometown discount and the likelihood of playing on the last year of his deal without a holdout or trade request is slim. It was just two short years ago that WR Deebo Samuel requested a trade from the San Francisco 49ers prior to draft day, only for cooler heads to prevail and eventually agree to a new deal. Now, it's WR Brandon Aiyuk's turn to try and get paid and rumors surfaced over the weekend that he too would request to be dealt. While that report was quickly shot down by his agent, there's still a lot of discussion about Aiyuk's future and if other teams will come calling on draft night.
