According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the San Francisco 49ers are signing former Pittsburgh Steelers and Kansas City Chiefs kicker Matthew Wright.
49ers are signing former Steelers and Chiefs kicker Matthew Wright, who spent this summer in Carolina's camp, to their practice squad. They need kicker insurance for the injured Jake Moody.
Wright has connected on 40 of his 46 field-goal attempts over his career, with a career-long of 59 yards, achieved last season with the Chiefs. He has made 35 of his 37 extra-point attempts. The Steelers signed Wright as an undrafted free agent out of UCF in 2019. He has also kicked for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
The 49ers drafted kicker Jake Moody in the third round of this year's draft. However, the rookie is dealing with a right quad injury that jeopardizes his Week 1 availability.
"Jake Moody's tracking well," general manager John Lynch said on Wednesday. "His recovery is going well, but we'll be prepared for anything."
The team also has Zane Gonzalez on the roster. However, he landed on season-ending injured reserve after suffering a right calf injury during pre-game warmups ahead of last week's preseason finale.
