The San Francisco 49ers might not be done with their roster tinkering. Well, that goes without saying. Rosters are never finalized in the NFL. But the team does plan to bring in a kicker before the start of the regular season.

"It's still fluid," head coach Kyle Shanahan said of the kicker situation before Wednesday's practice. "Most likely, we'll have one by the end of this weekend."

The 49ers are encouraged by the progress of their rookie kicker, Jake Moody. He has been dealing with a right quad injury, and his availability for Week 1 has been in doubt. Shanahan and general manager John Lynch believe that their rookie kicker is dealing with a short-term setback, so whoever they bring in will probably just be a temporary solution.

"Jake Moody's tracking well," Lynch said. "His recovery is going well, but we'll be prepared for anything."

Lynch added, "We've got some things in motion, some people traveling here, and I think we'll have something here, probably, early next week."

San Francisco has one more kicker on its roster, veteran Zane Gonzalez. However, he landed on season-ending injured reserve after suffering a right calf injury during pre-game warmups ahead of last week's preseason finale.

Shanahan notes that the 49ers have not yet come to terms with another kicker.

The coach said, "We're still looking into some practice squad guys (from other teams)."
