John Lynch explains 49ers’ trade for kicker Zane Gonzalez

Last week, the San Francisco 49ers seemingly filled their kicker vacancy by
trading for Zane Gonzalez, formerly of the Carolina Panthers. Robbie Gould, the team's kicker since 2017, remains a free agent. The 49ers undoubtedly wanted him back but could no longer afford to grant the 40-year-old the kind of money he sought.
Is Gonzalez the answer for the 49ers? He's
an answer, but not necessarily
the answer in Santa Clara.
"I think it's
a move," 49ers general manager John Lynch told reporters on Monday during the NFL owners' meetings in Arizona.
The Panthers planned to release Gonzalez, prompting Lynch to call his Panthers counterpart, Scott Fitterer. San Francisco swapped a conditional seventh-round draft pick in 2025 to Carolina in exchange for the kicker, hardly a significant amount.
"That just kind of came where we got tipped by the agent that they (Carolina) had told him he's going to be released and called Fitterer and said, 'Look, we're not going to give you much, but we like him. We'd love to do something.'" Lynch explained. "Our special teams coaches have liked him, his talent, his ability.
"So we're excited to get a talented kicker, and we'll see whether we add competition. But he's been a guy in this league. He's got a big leg. He's got a lot of talent. Our guys were excited to work with him."
Given the conditions of the trade, it is not unthinkable that the 49ers might pivot when it comes to their plan at kicker. The team has been doing its homework on kickers in the draft and may opt to go with a rookie. Or perhaps an opportunity to add a different veteran will present itself.
Regardless of their ultimate decision, the 49ers like Gonzalez but aren't necessarily tied to him.

49ers kicker Jake Moody feels well-prepared for transition to the NFL
Reporters have had opportunities to watch San Francisco 49ers kicker Jake Moody during a handful of open practices in recent weeks. Some have even meticulously accrued detailed unofficial stats of the rookie's efforts to sail footballs between the uprights.
The team's practice fields aren't the only places Moody has been kicking footballs, though. The rookie has been taking advantage of the proximity of the 49ers' home venue, Levi's Stadium, which sits next door.
"Just having the facilities right next to the stadium has been pretty beneficial," Moody told KNBR's Markus Boucher and Greg Papa on Thursday. "For me, especially, because we've already kicked in the stadium as an operation multiple times, just trying to get used to all the different kind of wind

Veteran kicker Zane Gonzalez missed a field goal from 43 yards out during Wednesday's practice. Rookie kicker Jake Moody made all four of his attempts, including a 53-yarder.

John Lynch: 49ers 'incredibly encouraged' after Brock Purdy throwing session
Brock Purdy started throwing this week, and it sounds like the San Francisco 49ers are pleased with their second-year quarterback's progress. While Purdy isn't doing anything overly taxing, it is the first time he is throwing a football—albeit reportedly a lighter-weighted one.
Purdy underwent surgery on March 10 to repair the tear of the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his right elbow, an injury suffered against the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship Game. His recovery is expected to last into late August or early September—barring any setbacks.
"There are certain markers that you hit," general manager John Lynch said Wednesday morning on SiriusXM NFL Radio. "He was 12 weeks out, and that meant it was time to throw. He did so and
Why John Lynch believes 49ers QB Brock Purdy is the "real deal"

Over the offseason, there has been significant talk surrounding the San Francisco 49ers and their quarterbacks, especially after the team signed Sam Darnold in free agency, providing them three capable options with starting experience in the former Carolina Panther, Brock Purdy, and Trey Lance.
Purdy is evidently the leader in the clubhouse, as stated by general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan several times this offseason, but many have pointed out his flaws, such as the inability to make throws downfield, as a reason why one of the other quarterbacks could win over the starting job with a strong performance in organized team activities(OTAs) and training camp.
What do the 49ers believe about Purdy's downfield ability?
