Mar 12, 2023 at 5:47 PM--

The San Francisco 49ers are re-signing safety Tashaun Gipson to a one-year, $2.9 million deal with $2.17 million guaranteed. The contract will include statistic and Pro Bowl incentives. Gipson was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on Wednesday.

The 32-year-old defender has played 11 seasons in the league, spending 2022 with the Niners after two seasons with the Chicago Bears. Gipson stepped in as the team's starter in 2022, pairing with second-year safety Talanoa Hufanga. He registered 61 tackles, a tackle for a loss, a quarterback hit, eight passes defensed, and five interceptions through 17 starts with the 49ers last season, per Pro Football Reference.

Gipson has recorded 604 tackles, 1.5 sacks, 65 passes defensed, 32 interceptions, three touchdowns, and a forced fumble in 157 game appearances (149 starts) through his 11 NFL seasons with the Cleveland Browns, Jacksonville Jaguars, Houston Texans, Bears, and 49ers. He was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2014.

The Browns signed Gipson (6-1, 207) as an undrafted free agent out of Wyoming in 2012.

The San Francisco 49ers know who their starting safeties will be in 2023. They are All-Pro Talanoa Hufanga and 12th-year veteran Tashaun Gipson. Gipson, who is 32 years old, reportedly flirted with the idea of retiring this offseason before returning to the Niners on a one-year deal. The always forward-thinking 49ers used their first pick in April's draft, a third-rounder, to add a player they hope can be Gipson's eventual replacement—Ji'Ayir Brown out of Penn State. Don't expect Brown to simply be an observer on the sidelines during his rookie season while Hufanga and Gipson do all the work. The 49ers plan to find ways to get him onto the football field and gain valuable experience. According to The Athletic, the coaches plan to utilize some three-safety
