Seven 49ers players among PFT’s top 100 free agents list for 2023

Feb 27, 2023 at 8:56 AM--

The San Francisco 49ers have 20 players scheduled to become unrestricted free agents at the start of the new league year on March 15. The team has retained one of its impending free agents, long snapper Taybor Pepper, re-signing him to a three-year deal this week.

Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk posted a ranking of her top 100 impending free agents for the 2023 offseason and will update it as signings, tags, and re-signings occur.

Seven 49ers players landed within the Pro Football Talk ranking. The most notable is quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who head coach Kyle Shanahan has already stated is unlikely to return. The veteran passer isn't the highest-ranked Niner on the list, though. That honor belongs to offensive tackle Mike McGlinchey.

The offensive lineman would love to return to the team that drafted him but understands the NFL is a business, and relocating is often part of that.

"I think that they value me here," McGlinchey said last month. "I think that they enjoy having me around, and I think I can play football at a very high level. So everything's on the table. I think you got to keep a very open mind with this stuff, but you also have to be real about it too, because there's a lot of damn good football players in our locker room, and a lot of them that need to be paid. And we certainly got one (Bosa) that's going to break the entire bank."

McGlinchey admitted that he hopes the 49ers don't use the franchise tag on him. With just $8 million in salary-cap space and some of that needing to go toward its rookie class, San Francisco is unlikely to use the franchise tag on any player this offseason.

Below are the 49ers players that landed on Pro Football Talk's top 100 free agents of 2023 list and where they ranked.

  • No. 11: OT Mike McGlinchey
  • No. 13: QB Jimmy Garoppolo
  • No. 32: DE Charles Omenihu
  • No. 45: DE Samson Ebukam
  • No. 48: DB Jimmie Ward
  • No. 84: LB Azeez Al-Shaair
  • No. 97: CB Emmanuel Moseley

Below are the 13 other 49ers players slated to become unrestricted free agents.

By David Bonilla

Nick Bosa was a monster in 2022. He'll probably be a monster again in 2023. The San Francisco 49ers pass rusher is the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year after leading the NFL with 18.5 sacks and frustrating so many opposing quarterbacks. It's no surprise to see Bosa on Next Gen Stats' list of the top 10 disruptors of 2022. The defensive end comes in at No. 2 in the ranking, with only Micah Parsons of the Dallas Cowboys ahead of him. After such an impressive campaign, why isn't Bosa listed in the top spot? "Well, it was a narrow miss," writer Nick Shook admits. "Bosa's totals are right up there with the top player on this

Everyone says it, so it must be true. The San Francisco 49ers have a loaded roster. Stacked. Deep. Super-Bowl caliber. However you choose to describe it, we can all agree that the roster is very good. They have Pro Bowlers all over the field. But there are some spots that will be filled by young players in 2023. And these young men will be asked to step up this season, in order for the 49ers to have the chance to win the Super Bowl. Here are five young players who need to come up big in 2023: 1. Drake Jackson, Edge Rusher The 49ers built their defense in 2019 around a dominant pass rush. That season, they had a player opposite of Nick Bosa (Dee Ford) who provided a lot of pressure off the edge. Since then, however, they have been unable to

Deommodore Lenoir: 49ers' Brandon Aiyuk will be a top-5 WR in 2023, put "everybody on notice"

By David Bonilla

Brandon Aiyuk is a favorite to be the San Francisco 49ers' breakout player of 2023. Last season, the wide receiver surpassed 1,000 receiving yards for the first time in his career, hauling in eight receiving touchdowns along the way. Teammates, fans, and the media aren't the only ones predicting a big year for the fourth-year wideout. "I'm about to take off," Aiyuk declared last week. "That's it. ... We all know it's football. Nothing's ever guaranteed, but just getting a better understanding for my life as a person, and then as a football player, kind of putting those things together and then just looking to get better. "I feel like, now, having another

NFL Media personality Adam Rank recently published his "State of the 2023 San Francisco 49ers" feature for NFL.com, an annual look at the state of the franchise and projections for the upcoming season. Among those predictions are the team's most valuable player and breakout star. Christian McCaffrey is the most obvious choice for MVP, and he's the guy Rank selected. The star running back was traded in late October to the 49ers and still contributed 1,210 total yards and 10 total touchdowns with his new team, totaling an impressive 1,880 yards and 13 touchdowns on the season. Rank can't wait to see what McCaffrey does for an encore
