Rapoport breaks down 49ers’ offseason QB options

Rookie quarterback Brock Purdy is getting ready to lead his San Francisco 49ers through the playoffs. The first obstacle is the Seattle Seahawks. The two teams will clash this afternoon, with the winner advancing to the Divisional Round.

Purdy is starting because the 49ers lost two quarterbacks to injuries this season. Trey Lance went down in Week 2 to an ankle injury, while Jimmy Garoppolo broke his foot in Week 13. However, Purdy and the 49ers kept winning, finishing the season as NFC West champions and riding a 10-game win streak.

Ian Rapoport, speaking with Rich Eisen on NFL Network's NFL GameDay, looked forward to the offseason and San Francisco's quarterback options for next season. The NFL insider broke down two options for the Niners, with the first being holding onto Purdy and Lance.

"Literally do nothing," Rapoport said. "Let Jimmy Garoppolo go to free agency, which I would say is probably more likely anyway. Just roll with Brock Purdy. Have Trey Lance stay there. He's not going anywhere. And then those two compete in training camp."

Another option would be to add a veteran quarterback like Tom Brady.

"Of course, Brady is with the Bucs now, is a free agent after this year," Rapoport said. "Still hasn't decided if he's going to play. I'd say there's at least a decent chance of that. We know that he has an affinity for his former hometown. We know he has an affinity for the 49ers."

If you thought last season's 49ers quarterback drama was maddening, the upcoming offseason might be more of the same if the team allows a quarterback battle between Lance and Purdy. Of course, throwing in the possibility of adding someone like Brady will just complicate the situation.

Rapoport added, "It's going to be fascinating, Rich, to see what they end up doing after this playoffs."

Rapoport: 49ers send clear message to teams inquiring about Brandon Aiyuk

By David Bonilla
Apr 16

Ian Rapoport didn't offer much of an update on the ongoing contract negotiations between the San Francisco 49ers and their standout wide receiver, Brandon Aiyuk. However, the NFL insider emphasized one thing: The team is not entertaining trade discussions at this juncture. Reacting to Aiyuk's decision to unfollow the 49ers on Instagram, Rapoport couldn't help but chuckle at the latest development. This practice has become commonplace among players who are unhappy with their contract situations. Wide receiver Deebo Samuel similarly took this action in 2022 before requesting to be traded just before the draft. Things have yet to escalate that far with Aiyuk, but Rapoport sees his

Brandon Aiyuk has been clear about his desire to receive fair compensation from the San Francisco 49ers—or any NFL team, for that matter. "I'm trying to get what I deserve," Aiyuk said last month on a podcast. "I feel like this season, this season playing football, I figured out who I was as a person and a player — what I bring to the table, what I bring to the locker room, what I bring to the organization." General manager John Lynch affirms that the 49ers aim to keep Aiyuk around, enduring he remains with the team for the remainder of his career. However, a recent report states there's

49ers begin offseason workout program today

By David Bonilla
Apr 15

The San Francisco 49ers are among the 25 teams kicking off their offseason workout program today. However, don't expect to see players facing off against each other on the practice field for the next couple of weeks. The program's early portion, dubbed "Phase One," spans two weeks and includes limited activities such as meetings, strength and conditioning, and physical rehabilitation only. The second phase of the offseason program extends for three weeks and includes on-field workouts for individual or group instruction and drills. After that, teams can hold up to 10 days of organized team activities on the practice field. As the 49ers continue to negotiate a contract extension for wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, it's important to note that all of these sessions are
