The San Francisco 49ers are getting healthier and saw their offseason prize, cornerback Charvarius Ward—or "Mooney," as he likes to be called—return to the practice field today.
"I feel good. I feel great. I'm ready to go," Ward said before practice.
He added: "I'm excited."
Ward did not play in the preseason. He has been recovering from what Shanahan described as "a muscle strain." However, the 49ers felt comfortable with what they saw from their new cornerback in the early part of training camp, allowing him to sit, heal, and be ready for the regular season.
What has the defensive back been working on while sidelined?
"Everything," Ward responded. "Conditioning, cardio, my technique, ball skills. I've been working on everything, just trying to get better in every area I can."
The team has two weeks until its regular-season opener against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field. The 49ers will use this three-day block of practices to work on fundamentals before taking Wednesday off and then focusing on how to attack their Week 1 opponent.
Roster Move
The first domino in the roster cut-down to 53 players has fallen. Aaron Wilson of Pro Football Network first reported that the team is parting ways with cornerback Ka'Dar Hollman. San Francisco officially announced the move before today's practice.
The 49ers have until Tuesday at 1 p.m. PT to cut their roster from 80 players to 53.
