With many of the starters expected to play in the preseason finale against the Houston Texans, the San Francisco 49ers announced that the following 16 players will not suit up for the contest at NRG Stadium.

On Wednesday, head coach Kyle Shanahan said that the plan is to have his starters play for a couple of drives. The team will then have 17 days until the regular-season opener against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field on Sunday, September 11.

"I'd like them to get a couple of drives," Shanahan said on KNBR, a day after telling reporters that his starters weren't expected to play beyond the first half. "I just want them to go out and have a little bit of the continuity of the offense. They haven't played since the first game of the preseason. After this, we have 17 days, I believe. Something like that until they play again (in Week 1 against the Bears).

"That's such a long time that I want them to go out there and just get in there a little bit. But I'm trying to get them out pretty fast. My goal is for them to stay healthy, and as long as they do that, I'll be happy."

Rapoport: 49ers send clear message to teams inquiring about Brandon Aiyuk

By David Bonilla

Ian Rapoport didn't offer much of an update on the ongoing contract negotiations between the San Francisco 49ers and their standout wide receiver, Brandon Aiyuk. However, the NFL insider emphasized one thing: The team is not entertaining trade discussions at this juncture.
