Report: 49ers QB Trey Lance’s throws ‘more crisp and tighter’ thanks to healthy finger

Jun 14, 2022 at 11:17 AM--

The positive reports surrounding the No. 3 overall pick in last year's NFL Draft keep pouring out from Santa Clara. There was a lot of chatter about the San Francisco 49ers having doubts about second-year quarterback Trey Lance as he prepares to become the team's full-time starter. That chatter lessened once the offseason program kicked off, and reporters got closer looks at the quarterback's progress.

A new report from NBC Sports Bay Area states that Lance's throws this offseason look much improved compared to last season.

"Sources close to the quarterback have shared with NBC Sports Bay Area that now, with a fully recovered finger, Lance's passes are noticeably 'more crisp and tighter,'" wrote Jennifer Lee Chan.

Lance started just two games last season, and was playing through a finger injury he sustained during the preseason. The quarterback told reporters in May that his finger has since fully healed. It just required time to heal, not offseason surgery.

"I kind of dealt with my finger throughout the season, so for me, it was kind of getting that back, and getting healthy, and feeling back to myself," Lance said. "Like, towards the end of the season, I wasn't the best version of myself overall. ... And I think the finger, for me, was the biggest thing just as far as throwing the ball. I kind of had to learn to throw the ball differently without kind of using my pointer finger, I guess because of just where it was at throughout the year. But now, I feel like I'm in a great spot, health-wise, and throwing the ball wall, and feeling really good."

With Garoppolo sidelined after his March 8 shoulder surgery and the 49ers hoping to trade the veteran quarterback ahead of the 2022 season, Lance has been taking most of the first-team reps through organized team activities and last week's minicamp.

The source told NBC Sports Bay Area that Lance's throws have "quite a bit more velocity" compared to those coming out of Garoppolo's hands, adding that Lance now throws a "slightly more accurate deep ball" now that he is fully healed.

The young quarterback is also among the players remaining at the team facility this week after the offseason program ended last Wednesday.

Trey Lance threw just 71 pass attempts during his rookie campaign, completing 41 for 603 yards with five touchdowns and two interceptions. The quarterback also scored a rushing touchdown.

Would the 49ers trade Trey Lance? John Lynch responds

By David Bonilla
Mar 27

John Lynch made one thing very clear on Monday morning during the NFL owners' meetings in Arizona. The San Francisco 49ers like their current quarterback room, comprised of Brock Purdy, Trey Lance, and Sam Darnold. Lynch clarified one more thing: If Purdy were completely healthy and ready to play come Week 1, he would be the starter. Of course, there is so much uncertainty surrounding Purdy's health. On March 10, the quarterback underwent surgery to repair the tear of the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his right elbow he suffered in the NFC Championship Game. His recovery is expected to go into September. Although, Lynch and the 49ers are hopeful the second-year

Why Trey Lance faces uphill battle to win 49ers' starting job, per Kyle Shanahan

The San Francisco 49ers expect Brock Purdy to be ready to play between early September and early November. That's a significant range considering the 2023 NFL season begins in early September. Head coach Kyle Shanahan, speaking with reporters at the NFL owners' meetings in Arizona, said the team expects its 23-year-old quarterback's recovery from his March 10 surgery to be six to eight months. The 49ers will know more in June, when Purdy begins throwing again and starts ramping up his workload as part of his rehab. "It might be Week 1," Shanahan said. "I think I'm hearing, at the latest, Week 4. But that's just all estimations, and we'll see what

Jed York on 49ers' decision to draft Trey Lance: "I wouldn't change anything"

By David Bonilla
Mar 28

San Francisco 49ers CEO Jed York spoke with reporters on Tuesday at the NFL owners' meetings in Arizona. He was asked about one of his quarterbacks, Trey Lance. In 2021, the team made a blockbuster move, trading significant draft capital to move up to the No. 3 overall pick, where they selected Lance. Two years later, Lance has started only four games and has been surpassed on the depth chart by last year's "Mr. Irrelevant," the No. 262 overall pick, Brock Purdy. Despite the cost of acquiring Lance, York doesn't regret the decision to trade up and still believes in Lance's potential. "I wouldn't change anything that we've made about the decision with Trey," York told reporters.
