Report: 49ers QB Trey Lance’s throws ‘more crisp and tighter’ thanks to healthy finger

Jun 14, 2022 at 11:17 AM--

The positive reports surrounding the No. 3 overall pick in last year's NFL Draft keep pouring out from Santa Clara. There was a lot of chatter about the San Francisco 49ers having doubts about second-year quarterback Trey Lance as he prepares to become the team's full-time starter. That chatter lessened once the offseason program kicked off, and reporters got closer looks at the quarterback's progress.

A new report from NBC Sports Bay Area states that Lance's throws this offseason look much improved compared to last season.

"Sources close to the quarterback have shared with NBC Sports Bay Area that now, with a fully recovered finger, Lance's passes are noticeably 'more crisp and tighter,'" wrote Jennifer Lee Chan.

Lance started just two games last season, and was playing through a finger injury he sustained during the preseason. The quarterback told reporters in May that his finger has since fully healed. It just required time to heal, not offseason surgery.

"I kind of dealt with my finger throughout the season, so for me, it was kind of getting that back, and getting healthy, and feeling back to myself," Lance said. "Like, towards the end of the season, I wasn't the best version of myself overall. ... And I think the finger, for me, was the biggest thing just as far as throwing the ball. I kind of had to learn to throw the ball differently without kind of using my pointer finger, I guess because of just where it was at throughout the year. But now, I feel like I'm in a great spot, health-wise, and throwing the ball wall, and feeling really good."

With Garoppolo sidelined after his March 8 shoulder surgery and the 49ers hoping to trade the veteran quarterback ahead of the 2022 season, Lance has been taking most of the first-team reps through organized team activities and last week's minicamp.

The source told NBC Sports Bay Area that Lance's throws have "quite a bit more velocity" compared to those coming out of Garoppolo's hands, adding that Lance now throws a "slightly more accurate deep ball" now that he is fully healed.

The young quarterback is also among the players remaining at the team facility this week after the offseason program ended last Wednesday.

Trey Lance threw just 71 pass attempts during his rookie campaign, completing 41 for 603 yards with five touchdowns and two interceptions. The quarterback also scored a rushing touchdown.

Trey Lance improving thanks to help from 49ers locker neighbors

By David Bonilla

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance is learning. He's had a lot of help, though. Last season, he spent his first year in the NFL learning from quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, serving as the veteran's backup. Lance has one of the best coaching staffs in the NFL helping him develop. While Garoppolo works on preparing for his next chapter elsewhere, other veteran teammates have stepped in to work with Lance and offer advice. Two of those veterans are his locker room neighbors, safety Jimmie Ward and cornerback Jason Verrett. The arrangement probably isn't a coincidence. Ward and Verrett are two of the best pass defenders on the 49ers defense. During Saturday's practice, Ward hauled in a Lance-thrown football. That will likely spark some conversation in the

49ers-Packers: Kyle Shanahan offers day-after-game evaluations of Trey Lance, Samuel Womack, Trey Sermon

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has had a chance to watch the film from Friday night's 28-21 preseason win over the Green Bay Packers. It was an opportunity for a lot of young players to shine. But, more importantly, it was a chance for them to gain valuable experience. Second-year quarterback Trey Lance, the team's starter, finished the night 4-of-5 for 92 yards, a touchdown, and a perfect passer rating of 158.3. He was among the highest-graded 49ers players by Pro Football Focus. After reviewing the film, Shanahan said that his evaluation of the 22-year-old quarterback isn't much different from what he said last night. "He did a

"Everything has definitely slowed down": 49ers QB Trey Lance more comfortable in 2nd season

KNBR was live at the San Francisco 49ers facility in Santa Clara and had an opportunity to speak with Trey Lance. The second-year quarterback feels more acclimated to the area and the team following a whirlwind 2021 campaign. "I know where all the Chipotles are nearby and everything like that," Lance said jokingly. "For me, I just feel so much more comfortable. I know the guys in the locker room so much better. I'm obviously in a very different position than I was last year, and it's just been a ton of fun." A "very different position" is correct. Last season, Lance served as Jimmy Garoppolo's backup, learning from the veteran quarterback. He has been handed the reins this offseason and will be the team's QB1 come Week 1.
