Recap: 49ers newcomers shine in 28-21 preseason win over Packers

By Kirk Larrabee
Aug 12

The spotlight was on quarterback Trey Lance heading into Friday night's preseason opener for the San Francisco 49ers, but it was a slew of newcomers that stole the show in a 28-21 win over the Green Bay Packers. Not that Lance didn't deliver in his limited opportunities. Lance played on two possessions in the game and led the 49ers to 10 first quarter points,

21 quick observations from the 49ers' preseason win over the Packers

Preseason games don't count, but they do matter. Especially for players trying to make the team, and for a team with three young quarterbacks who need reps. That was the case for the San Francisco 49ers Friday night, as they hosted the Green Bay Packers. The good news is that all three signal-callers looked good. There was a lot to like (and a few things to dislike) for 49ers fans. I saw my fair share of good and bad. Here are my 21 quick observations from the 49ers' preseason win over the Packers. Kemoko Turay was everywhere and was disrupting things the entire time he was in the game. That's a good sign. Tarvarius Moore is so talented. But he makes too many mistakes. The way he got beat in the first quarter for the touchdown was bad. Talanoa

DeMeco Ryans on why Javon Kinlaw could be key to 49ers defense's success

By David Bonilla
Aug 7

Last week, San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans identified three things defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw needed to work on in preparation for his third NFL season: technique, technique, technique. Kinlaw is returning after undergoing season-ending reconstructive surgery to repair his ACL last year. To this point, the former No. 14 overall pick's contributions have been underwhelming. That could change in 2022, though. Kinlaw has put in the work during his recover, and as the 49ers ramp up his training camp workload, many feel that the defender could be on the cusp of becoming a dominant force for the defensive front. "I think Javon, he's

Drake Jackson's usage might vary week to week; Young 49ers CBs have an opportunity vs. Packers

By David Bonilla

Maybe soon, Drake Jackson will become the complementary bookend to Nick Bosa that the San Francisco 49ers envisioned for Dee Ford. That was the hope when the team used its first selection in this year's draft, a second-round pick, on the defensive end out of USC. DeMeco Ryans is in his second year as the 49ers' defensive coordinator. He is working to ensure young players like Jackson are prepared for the rigors of an NFL season. He also wants to put those players in the best position to succeed. Their success is the 49ers' success, after all. For now, it looks like the 49ers have Samson Ebukam penciled in as the starter opposite Bosa. That role should eventually land with Jackson. "With Drake, he's coming along," Ryans told reporters after Wednesday's practice.
