49ers reportedly among teams ‘in mix’ for WR Dede Westbrook, work out two D-linemen

Jul 23, 2021 at 2:54 PM--

The San Francisco 49ers are among the teams "in the mix" for free agent wide receiver Dede Westbrook, per Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press. According to Tomasson, the receiver says he is visiting the Minnesota Vikings this weekend, but the 49ers, Seattle Seahawks, and Cincinnati Bengals have expressed interest.

There was a report in May that San Francisco had "preliminary communication" with Westbrook but nothing more came of it.

Westbrook, 27, appeared in two games with the Jacksonville Jaguars last season after dropping down the team's depth chart. He recorded one reception for four yards in those two games before suffering a torn ACL during Week 7.

The Jacksonville Jaguars made Westbrook a fourth-round selection out of Oklahoma in 2017. He caught 159 passes for 1,716 yards and nine touchdowns over his first three NFL seasons. Westbrook also had 14 combined carries for 125 rushing yards in 2018 and 2019.

San Francisco worked out defensive linemen Justus Reed and Eddie Vanderdoes, per Aaron Wilson.

Reed played for Virginia Tech in 2020, recording 28 tackles, nine tackles for a loss, and 6.5 sacks through 10 games as a senior. Eddie Vanderdoes has been with the Houston Texans since 2019 but opted out of last season. The Texans released him with a non-football injury designation on February 24. Vanderdoes spent the previous three seasons with the then-Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders made Vanderdoes a third-round draft pick out of UCLA in 2017.

The San Francisco 49ers were holding onto a commanding 41-17 lead against the Detroit Lions when starting cornerback Jason Verrett went down with an injury. The veteran was grasping at his right knee. Verrett was able to walk off the field on his own. However, he stopped short of the sideline before grabbing at the knee again and being assisted by the team's training staff. Verrett left for the locker room after the game resumed but had trouble getting there on his own. He appeared to be tearing up before two trainers came to his assistance to help him get to the locker room. He eventually had to be taken the remainder of the way on a cart and general manager John Lynch was seen with the cornerback, per multiple reports. Verrett has been plagued with

Dan Campbell's admission reveals how Trey Lance is impacting Lions' prep work for 49ers

If the San Francisco 49ers had not drafted Trey Lance with the No. 3 overall pick, the Detroit Lions probably wouldn't be too worried about whoever was backing up Jimmy Garoppolo, assuming Garoppolo remained with the team. Instead, the Lions would be focused on stopping the veteran quarterback and him alone. There wouldn't be many thoughts about Nate Sudfeld or whoever sits behind him on the depth chart. The Niners did draft Lance, though. Then head coach Kyle Shanahan showed off an unorthodox game plan in the team's preseason finale against the Las Vegas Raiders, swapping between Garoppolo and Lance in the middle of drives. Maybe it was just to give Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell something to think about as he prepared for his Week 1 matchup against the 49ers. If that
