Vick in communication with Deshaun Watson, suggests 49ers as a good fit

Deshaun Watson wants out of Houston. The Texans are saying they have no plans to trade their star quarterback. The situation between player and team may not be near a resolution.

Former NFL quarterback Michael Vick has been in contact with Watson and has a suggestion on a potential landing spot if the Texans passer can force a trade. Watson does have some leverage. The no-trade clause within his contract allows him to approve or deny potential landing spots. But first, he has to convince Texans brass to cave to his trade demand.

"I'm going to have a conversation with [Watson] later on today," Vick told FS1's Nick Wright as he filled in for Colin Cowherd on The Herd. "We just spoke about it a few minutes ago, and we're going to talk about it, just in totality.

"But look, if I'm his agent, I'm pushing to get with the best team. I'm looking to get with the San Francisco 49ers or the Chicago Bears. Need some defense, need some weapons. Those teams are short of a quarterback, and a deal can be made [for Watson]."

Vick notes that 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan knows how to get the best out of his quarterbacks, which should appeal to an exciting player like Watson.

"Kyle was doing it with Jimmy G. He got it done with him," Vick added. "They appeared in the Super Bowl. He was even doing it with Nick Mullens. So, to get a guy like Deshaun, it just enhances everything, and now you can just take it a step further. You've got weapons, you can stretch the field, you can run the football, and then you can play defense.

"Half of that team was hurt, and they still were competitive this year. So I know for a fact if [Watson] goes there, then he can compete (on the level) with Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson and those guys who are going to be representing the AFC in the future."

As for Matthew Stafford, another quarterback looking for a new NFL home, Vick feels the Texans or New England Patriots could be landing spots for the Detroit Lions signal-caller.

However, the NFL insider emphasized one thing: The team is not entertaining trade discussions at this juncture. Reacting to Aiyuk's decision to unfollow the 49ers on Instagram, Rapoport couldn't help but chuckle at the latest development.
