6 teams with better odds than the 49ers to add Deshaun Watson before Week 1

Jan 13, 2021 at 6:55 AM--

Despite the fractured relationship, the Houston Texans remain the favorites to have Deshaun Watson as their starting quarterback to kick off the 2021 season. However, should the relationship be damaged beyond repair, a trade could be in the quarterback's future if he chooses to force a divorce.

San Francisco 49ers fans would love to see what Watson paired with head coach Kyle Shanahan would mean for opposing defenses. However, that would also mean giving up a lot in terms of compensation to acquire the young playmaker, and oddsmakers have five teams — other than the Texans — listed as more likely destinations for the disgruntled quarterback.

Below are the 10 favorites to have Watson on their rosters during Week 1 of the 2021 season, per Bovada and courtesy of Odds Shark.

  • Texans -160
  • Dolphins +250
  • Patriots +950
  • Jets +950
  • Bears +1200
  • Colts +1200
  • 49ers +2000
  • Washington +2000
  • Eagles +2500
  • Lions +3300

Houston made Watson the No. 12 overall pick out of Clemson in 2017. He led the league with a career-high 4,823 passing yards through 16 games in 2020, completing 70.2 percent of his passes while throwing 33 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Now, only two teams — still including the Texans — sit ahead of head coach Kyle Shanahan's squad, according to oddsmakers. The relationship between Watson and the Texans has soured. The quarterback is frustrated that he has not been included in major decisions despite the team indicating that he would.

The 49ers Must Pursue Deshaun Watson

The smoke that began rising on Twitter earlier this week about Deshaun Watson being unhappy in Houston has consistently gotten thicker as the week has progressed. Typically, where there's smoke, there's fire. The 49ers absolutely must pursue all avenues available to them to bring Watson to Santa Clara. He would instantly transform this 49ers squad into a perennial Super Bowl contender. Watson finished the 2020 season as the second-highest rated passer in the league behind likely MVP Aaron Rodgers. He accomplished this on a team that was relatively bereft of talent on the offensive side of the ball, and was mired in a terrible coaching situation (Bill O'Brien was fired after four straight losses to start the season). Despite the dysfunction, Watson still led the

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk caused a little bit of buzz on Thursday morning, reporting that NFL whispers were pointing to Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson potentially requesting a trade, despite having recently signed a new four-year, $156 million extension. There's a growing buzz in league circles that Deshaun Watson could ask to be traded, and his new contract doesn't make that as difficult as you'd think
