49ers signing veteran WR Jaron Brown, per Schefter

Aug 19, 2020 at 11:24 AM--

The San Francisco 49ers are signing former Arizona Cardinals and Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Jaron Brown, according to a report from Adam Schefter of ESPN. Brown visited with the team on Tuesday.

As Schefter notes, the 49ers recently lost wide receiver Jalen Hurd for the season to a torn ACL. This will be his second missed season since San Francisco made him a third-round draft pick last year.

Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reported on Monday that San Francisco intended to work out Brown. He needed to pass three COVID-19 tests to do so.

Brown, 30, has spent the past two seasons in Seattle. His best season came in 2017 with the Cardinals when he hauled in 31 passes for 477 yards with four touchdowns.

The Cardinals signed Brown as an undrafted free agent out of Clemson in 2013. He registered 16 receptions for 220 yards with two touchdowns through 14 games with the Seahawks in 2019. Brown has caught 116 passes for 1,563 yards with 16 touchdowns through his seven NFL seasons.

Brown joins a receiver group that recently added veterans Tavon Austin and J.J. Nelson via one-year deals.

The 49ers' expected No. 1 wideout, Deebo Samuel, is recovering from a foot injury and may not be ready to play by Week 1. San Francisco's first-round draft pick, Brandon Aiyuk, has been impressing during training camp.

'I think they like all three': Schefter says 49ers keeping an open mind on QB draft prospects

Right now, if he were forced to make a guess, Adam Schefter is in the camp of those who would tell you that the San Francisco 49ers are drafting quarterback Mac Jones of Alabama with the No. 3 overall pick. However, there are still 18 days until the start of the 2021 NFL Draft, things are fluid, and things might change. Head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch attended Jones' second pro day on March 30, picking that event over former Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields' workout, which took place on the same day. That, of course, led to massive speculation that San Francisco prefers the Alabama quarterback to the former Buckeye or even Trey Lance of North Dakota State. Shanahan and Lynch are expected to be in attendance for the second pro days of

Justin Fields, Trey Lance, and Mac Jones. One of those quarterbacks is likely to be part of the San Francisco 49ers roster following the draft. Jimmy Garoppolo has been part of the roster since a mid-season trade in 2017 sent him from Foxborough to Santa Clara, where he is expected to remain for at least the upcoming season. Some wonder if plans could change, though. There were reports that the 49ers seek a first-round pick for Garoppolo. Most who have been following the team know that basically means San Francisco has no intention — for now — of trading its veteran quarterback and would have to be blown away by an offer to consider deviating from its plan. That plan is to have Garoppolo serve as a bridge quarterback, allowing the

The San Francisco 49ers are among several teams that have held pre-draft virtual meetings with former Michigan running back Chris Evans. The news was brought to us by Danish journalist Søren Hansen, who was the first to report the date of Justin Fields' second pro day. "Michigan's RB Chris Evans has had zoom calls with the 49ers, Bengals, Patriots, Vikings, Giants and Chiefs," reads a translated tweet by Hansen. "Did not get much playing time in college and sat out in 2019, but is a great back and a good receiver who had a strong Pro Day. Interesting name for the bottom of the third day of the draft." Evans (5-11, 211) carried the football 16 times for just 73 yards

DUI described as a 'transitional event' for Mac Jones, potential 49ers draft pick

Much has been made of Mac Jones' DUI in 2017. Some would say that not enough has been made of it while evaluating the former Alabama quarterback's character. However, a recent feature from sheds some light on the incident and how it altered Jones' path. At the time, Jones was a redshirt freshman and the third quarterback on the depth chart. In the very early hours of November 3, 2017, Jones was involved in a car accident, underwent a sobriety test, and was then arrested for driving under the influence. He was also charged with improper ID by a minor. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident. "We are disappointed in
