49ers set to honor Dwight Clark on ‘87 Day’

Aug 7, 2020 at 6:52 AM--

The San Francisco 49ers will honor San Francisco 49ers legend Dwight Clark and his jersey number today, August 7, which has been dubbed "87 Day," the team announced on Thursday.

"In addition to honoring Clark, the ultimate teammate, '87 Day' serves to raise awareness and generate donations for The Golden Heart Fund," the 49ers wrote in a statement. "The preferred charitable cause of Clark, the Golden Heart Fund was created to serve current and future 49ers alumni during times of need for financial, medical, psychological or emotional support. To donate, please visit goldenheartfund.org and click 'donate.'"

The 49ers expressed their continued commitment to supporting the fight against ALS, the disease that took Clark's life in 2018.

While fans cannot celebrate 87 Day in person at training camp this year due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the 49ers have thought of ways to honor the former receiver.

  • Clark's statue at Levi's Stadium will be illuminated with special lighting.
  • Stadium LED ribbons and video boards will feature unique 87 Day messaging.
  • For inclusion on stadium LED boards, fans can share their "DC" memories on social media using #87Day.
  • 49ers coaches will honor Clark today by wearing "87" merchandise, including jerseys and t-shirts.

John Lynch says 49ers roster is 'pretty much set,' Dee Ford restructure doesn't indicate otherwise

The San Francisco 49ers restructured pass rusher Dee Ford's contract on Friday, creating an additional $9.5 million salary-cap room by converting his base salary into a signing bonus. That, of course, led to speculation that the team might be gearing up to make a signing. There was also the possibility that the move was made with next year's salary cap in mind. It is, after all, expected to see a drop due to the impact of COVID-19 on this season. General manager John Lynch indicated on Sunday that the reason for Ford's restructure was more due to the latter, saying that the 53-man roster heading into Week 1 is "pretty much

Dee Ford is well-respected as a great NFL pass rusher. That isn't how he wants to be known, though. The San Francisco 49ers defensive end wants to be known as a great overall defender, and not a situational player. Ford suffered a calf injury during training camp and finally returned to practice this week. He told reporters on Thursday that he feels fine and is ready for the 2020 season. "When you're dealing with a calf, you don't want to risk it getting to that Achilles tendon," Ford said of the training-camp setback. "At the end of the day, we had to jump on it because our goal, and especially my goal, which is the team's goal, is to be there 16 games plus postseason. And I'm not going to waive on that at all. We just had to get that (injury)

49ers-Cardinals: Kyle Shanahan hopes Deebo Samuel can practice on Friday; he and Brandon Aiyuk remain game-day decisions

By David Bonilla
Sep 11, 2020

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan joined KNBR on Friday morning and shared some injury updates. All eyes during practices this week have been on the statuses of wide receivers Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk. Aiyuk (hamstring) got back on the practice field on Thursday, but Samuel remained sidelined as he recovers from a Jones fracture in June. Shanahan was asked about Samuel's status for Sunday when the 49ers open the season by hosting the Arizona Cardinals at Levi's Stadium. "I haven't gotten an update from the trainers yet," Shanahan said on the Murph & Mac show, "but I'm really hoping they're going to get out and practice today. I know we got Aiyuk out there yesterday, and he looked good. Deebo wasn't able to get out there
