The San Francisco 49ers haven't yet officially announced the re-signing of defensive tackle Earl Mitchell, but the team did announce the signing of another defensive lineman on Tuesday.
The 49ers have signed defensive lineman Ray Smith to the team's practice squad.
The Detroit Lions signed Smith (6-1, 302) on May 10 as a rookie free agent out of Boston College. The Lions waived him on August 31, and then signed him to the practice squad the next day. Detroit later released Smith on October 1.
Smith appeared in 40 games with 34 starts with Boston College and racked up 138 tackles, eight passes defensed, 1.5 sacks, and one interception during his collegiate career. He started 12 games as a senior in 2018 and recorded 50 tackles, three passes defensed, and one interception that season.
