49ers-Buccaneers Injury Report: Jimmie Ward, Jalen Hurd don’t practice; Nick Bosa expected to play Sunday

Sep 5, 2019 at 4:01 PM--

The San Francisco 49ers are preparing for their Week 1 contest against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida.

The big news out of Santa Clara on Thursday was the injury to Jimmie Ward. The defensive back suffered a broken finger during Wednesday's practice, did not practice on Thursday, and his status for Sunday is in doubt.

Rookie wide receiver Jalen Hurd continues to miss practice as he deals with a back injury. He is unlikely to play on Sunday.

"Haven't ruled him out yet," head coach Kyle Shanahan said on Wednesday, "but if I had to say something today, he's doubtful."

Nick Bosa (ankle) has been practicing this week and defensive coordinator Robert Saleh told reporters that the rookie defensive end is expected to play on Sunday.

"He's going," Saleh said. "He should be (ready)."

Football Outsiders has once again taken a look at the best young players in the league who don't have a lot of playing time. The feature for ESPN casts aside first-round picks and other top prospects, and instead focuses on those who didn't receive a lot of fanfare. "This is a list of players who have a strong chance to make an impact in the NFL despite their lack of draft stock and the fact they weren't immediate NFL starters," wrote Rivers McCown. The list is a top 25 ranking, and two players represent the San Francisco 49ers. The first — 26-year-old offensive lineman Daniel Brunskill — comes in at No. 10. The

Joey Bosa suggests 49ers should start saving money for Nick Bosa's future contract

Joey Bosa and the Los Angeles Chargers came to terms on a five-year extension worth up to $135 million. The deal includes $102 million in guaranteed money. That's a new record for a defensive player, surpassing Myles Garrett of the Cleveland Browns. Bosa's $27 million average annual salary makes him football's highest-paid defender, according to Spotrac. Bosa is excited and grateful to have the deal done. The defender doesn't, however, expect the record amount to stand for very long. Instead, he believes it has merely helped reset the market in the right direction. Bosa even hinted that maybe the San Francisco 49ers should start saving up for a few years down the road

Jimmie Ward says Jason Verrett looks focused, ready, and anxious to prove himself

The San Francisco 49ers admittedly gambled on signing Jason Verrett last offseason. Why would it be a gamble to add a Pro Bowl cornerback to your defense? After being a first-round draft pick by the Chargers in 2014, Verrett had just one healthy season — that 2015 Pro Bowl year. He has landed on injured reserve in each of his other five NFL seasons, including last season with the 49ers. Verrett nearly made it back in 2019. He made one game appearance, taking part in just four defensive snaps before being sidelined for the remainder of the season. Safety Jimmie Ward knows what it's like to be plagued by injuries. He landed on injured reserve four times before last year's breakout performance in a season during which he managed to remain relatively healthy.
