Congratulations to 49ers quarterback and new father, Nick Mullens

Aug 30, 2019 at 3:11 PM--

A day after a brief cameo in the San Francisco 49ers' preseason finale, quarterback Nick Mullens is a new father. His wife, Haleigh, gave birth to their son, Luke Clayton Mullens, according to Cam Inman of Bay Area News Group.

Congratulations to Mullens and his wife.

Mullens spent the offseason competing with C.J. Beathard for San Francisco's backup quarterback job. He is a near-lock to make the 53-player roster. The deadline for NFL teams to get down to the required limit is Saturday at 1 p.m. PT.

Mullens played in one drive against the Los Angeles Chargers on Thursday night.

"The plan was for [Beathard and Mullens] to start the same amount of quarters (in preseason)," head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters after the game. "C.J. had six, and we wanted him to get six. I was going to debate on how long to keep him in, but after he got hit a few times in protection, I just pulled him out."

San Francisco signed Mullens as an undrafted free agent out of Southern Miss in 2017. He completed 176-of-274 attempts (64.2 percent) for 2,277 yards with 13 touchdowns and 10 interceptions through eight starts with the 49ers in 2018.

Quarterback Nick Mullens won't get a start anytime soon without Jimmy Garoppolo being forced to miss a game. He has eight starts for the San Francisco 49ers, all of which came during the 2018 season after starter Garoppolo suffered a torn ACL, and C.J. Beathard proved ineffective and sustained an injury of his own. It wasn't a big sample size, but Mullens filled in admirably, passing for 2,277 yards with 13 touchdowns and 10 interceptions through those eight games before returning to his backup role the next season—following a training-camp competition with Beathard. The play changed the course of the game. The Kansas City Chiefs converted a much-needed 3rd-and-15 from their own 35-yard line in the fourth quarter. Just like that, momentum shifted. San Francisco 49ers fans know how things ended. The Chiefs ended up walking away with the Lombardi Trophy while the Niners walked away with heartache. Many fans have seen the play over and over. Not intentionally, necessarily. For a while, that's all that was being shown on NFL Network. Fans will quickly point to defensive end Nick Bosa set on a collision course with quarterback Patrick Mahomes, though. Eric Fisher wrapped both arms around the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year as he was closing in on the sack. Was Bosa held? The defender was asked that
