San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan hopes to have guard Mike Person back for the 2019 season and possibly beyond. Person is scheduled to become a free agent at the start of the new league year on March 13 but Shanahan told reporters on Wednesday that the team hopes to get a new deal done before then.
Person started his career as a seventh-round draft pick by the 49ers in 2011. He only lasted one season with that regime before being released the next offseason. Person went on to spend time with the Seattle Seahawks, St. Louis Rams, Atlanta Falcons, Kansas City Chiefs, and the Indianapolis Colts for two stints before re-joining the 49ers on May 9, 2018. He started a career-high 16 games at right guard for San Francisco this past season and ended the year as the team's third-highest graded offensive lineman and highest-graded guard, according to Pro Football Focus.
"Just the fact that Mike Person came in off the street, we signed him, and he was able to start 16 games for us," Shanahan said at the NFL Scouting Combine.
This is Person's second stint with Shanahan. He played for Shanahan when the 49ers head coach was the offensive coordinator in Atlanta.
Shanahan added that if the 49ers can't come to an agreement with Person, Joshua Garnett could be an option to fill in. While Shanahan has liked what he has seen out of Garnett, he noted that the guard hasn't been able to stay healthy.
