The San Francisco 49ers' game of playing roster yo-yo with veteran quarterback Tom Savage is likely over. The Cincinnati Bengals claimed him off of waivers, the team announced on Monday.

The 49ers waived Savage on Saturday to make room on the active roster for running back Jeff Wilson, who was promoted from the practice squad. San Francisco doesn't carry three active quarterbacks into a game, and Savage often found himself as the odd man out as roster decisions needed to be made or was among the inactive players at kickoff.

The 49ers, however, would quickly re-sign the quarterback, so he could be available to practice with the team during the week. That will not happen this week, and the 49ers will have to look elsewhere if they want a third quarterback on the roster.

San Francisco initially signed Savage on October 16 before waiving him four days later. The team re-signed the quarterback on October 22 only to waive him again on November 1 before its game against the Oakland Raiders. Savage was re-signed the next day on November 2 before being waived for the final time on Saturday.

Savage did not appear in a game for San Francisco.

The Houston Texans made Savage a fourth-round draft pick out of Pittsburgh in 2014. His best season came last year when he completed 56.1 percent of his passes for 1,412 yards with five touchdowns and six interceptions.
