Richard Sherman Includes Ahkello Witherspoon in his Elite Cornerback Academy

Jun 27, 2018 at 1:15 PM--

Richard Sherman is hosting several top cornerbacks in the Bay Area this week, as they work to refine their coverage skills in advance of training camp. The session features footwork coach Richard Whitfield, multiple Pro Bowlers, and 49ers second-year cornerback Akhello Witherspoon. Witherspoon assumed a starting role last season, and will look to build on an encouraging end to the year. Offseason observers have frequently remarked that Witherspoon looks miles ahead of where he was last offseason, in terms of both technique and confidence. The work alongside elite NFL corners should only accelerate his progress.

PFF power rankings: 49ers a contender despite lacking an 'elite quarterback'

By David Bonilla
May 25

The San Francisco 49ers came in at No. 10 in ESPN's post-draft NFL power rankings. However, they did a little better in Pro Football Focus' power rankings, coming in one spot higher at No. 9. Power rankings don't mean a lot in May—if they mean anything at any point. However, they offer fans a look at how analysts and the media perceive each team. While Pro Football Focus has the 49ers coming in ninth overall, they are the fourth NFC team listed, behind only the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2), Los Angeles Rams (3), and Green Bay Packers (6). One area of doubt appears to be the

Do the 49ers have an issue at slot cornerback?

Earlier this offseason, the San Francisco 49ers were left with a hole at slot cornerback following the departure of longtime veteran starter K'Waun Williams, who played five seasons with the team before joining the Denver Broncos on a one-year deal. Fast-forward two months and the 49ers do not have an apparent solution to the vacancy, with general manager John Lynch openly stating that there would be an open competition for the position. "I think what [defensive coordinator] DeMeco [Ryans] did on that staff last year, we were hurting at corner a large part of the year, to finish third in the league was pretty, a testament to DeMeco, his staff and to our players and we felt like we needed to add. You can't have enough good ones," Lynch said. "We had an open spot

Rookie minicamp gets underway Friday for 49ers drafted players and undrafted free agents, but before those players take the field, they were hit with a number of questions from reporters during pre-camp media sessions on Thursday. Among the players to speak with reporters on Thursday were wide receiver and third-round pick Danny Gray (SMU), offensive lineman and fourth-round pick Spencer Burford (UT-San Antonio), cornerback and sixth-round pick Tariq Castro-Fields (Penn State), quarterback and seventh-round pick Brock Purdy (Iowa State), and undrafted offensive linemen Jason Poe (Mercer) and Dohnovan West (Arizona State). 49ers WebZone already discussed what Gray said

49ers rookie Kalia Davis not molding his game after D.J. Jones

The San Francisco 49ers begin their rookie minicamp on Friday afternoon, giving fans and media their first look at the nine rookies the team drafted, as well as the undrafted free agents the team signed or invited to camp. One player that likely will not participate in team drills is sixth-round defensive tackle Kalia Davis, who is recovering from a torn ACL he suffered last fall, which likely played a role in his falling draft stock. Davis has had an intriguing journey, playing linebacker during his freshman season before transitioning to the defensive line, which he attributed to his bigger size. "Well really, I moved from linebacker to D-lineman because my body was changing," Davis said. "I [gained] a little too much weight. The biggest part about
