The San Francisco 49ers have reportedly signed
QB Christian Ponder to a one-year deal, per Josina Anderson of
ESPN.
Ponder was drafted in 2011 by the Minnesota Vikings with the 12th overall pick. He would go on to start 26 games during his first two seasons with the Vikings. His best season came in 2012 when he started all 16 games for the Vikings, completing 62.1 percent of his passes for 2,935 yards, 18 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions.
During his college career, Ponder played for Florida State and was the Seminoles' starting quarterback from 2008 to 2010.
Ponder, who grew up a Broncos fan, signed with Denver in November of 2015, but was waived the next month. The 49ers will practice with the Broncos this week prior to their
Week 2 preseason matchup in Denver on Saturday.
The 49ers
went through a team walk-through/practice today with just two quarterbacks.
Colin Kaepernick is suffering for shoulder soreness and has not fully practiced with the team since Wednesday, August 10. That was six days ago. He missed Sunday's preseason game against the Houston Texans – a game that saw backup quarterback
Thad Lewis suffer a torn ACL.
Lewis, who was officially placed on injured reserve today, will miss the season and Kaepernick's status remains unclear despite head coach Chip Kelly calling it "day-to-day."
49ers quarterback
Blaine Gabbert, Kaepernick, and Ponder were all part of the same 2011 NFL Draft class.

Should the 49ers be worried about Christian McCaffrey's workload?
It's not an exaggeration to say that RB Christian McCaffrey is coming off one of the best individual seasons in the history of the San Francisco 49ers.
In his first full year in red and gold, McCaffrey led the NFL in rushing yards (1,459), total yards (2,023) and total touchdowns (21) on his way to becoming Offensive Player of the Year. His yards on the ground were the fourth most ever for a Niners running back and his 21 touchdowns trailed only WR Jerry Rice's team record of 23, which the Hall of Famer accomplished in just 12 games in 1987. McCaffrey was also prolific in the passing game, hauling in 67 receptions and often providing a safety net for QB Brock Purdy.
Because McCaffrey has meant so much to Kyle Shanahan's scheme, it's easy to see why the offense
49ers insider: I would be surprised if Brandon Aiyuk isn't signed to a new deal
As expected, the most significant storyline surrounding the San Francisco 49ers this offseason revolves around the contract negotiations with star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. There hasn't been much official chatter on that front aside from general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan assuring reporters that every effort is being made to retain Aiyuk.
That hasn't stopped the rampant speculation from the media, with reports of interest from teams like the Jacksonville Jaguars and Pittsburgh Steelers, as well as former teammate
