49ers Mock Drafts: Quarterbacks still lead, but DeForest Buckner gains ground

While his numbers dipped slightly this week,
Cal QB Jared Goff continues to lead mock drafts as the San Francisco 49ers' projected pick in the first round of this month's NFL Draft. The former Golden Bear quarterback has led our survey, now consisting of 107 mock drafts, for five straight weeks.
The top two projected players are both quarterbacks and consume 73.9 percent of the total votes all by themselves. Goff has 56.1 percent while
North Dakota State QB Carson Wentz, sitting in a distant second place, is projected to land with the 49ers by 17.8 percent of the mocks surveyed.

Last week, the third place spot was tied by
UCLA OLB Myles Jack,
Ohio State DE Joey Bosa, and
Oregon DE DeForest Buckner. This week, Buckner is all alone in third place going to the 49ers in 5.6 percent of the mocks surveyed.
In 2015, an overwhelming majority of mock drafts had the 49ers taking
Arik Armstead out of Oregon with their first-round selection. While that actually happened, San Francisco was able to do so after trading down a few spots.

Breaking down the 49ers drafts under John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan
We are less than one week away from the NFL Draft, and the San Francisco 49ers have their first day-one draft pick since 2021. That was the year they selected QB Trey Lance number three overall. The trade-up to get Lance cost the 49ers their first-round picks in 2022 and 2023. And now that they are back in the first round, at pick 31, fans are anxious to see what the team does with the pick. And with former assistant GM, Adam Peters, now in Washington, it will be interesting to see how well the 49ers draft without Peters in the room.
We looked back at the seven drafts GM John Lynch and Head Coach Kyle Shanahan have led to see what information we could pull from those drafts. There were plenty of hits, plenty of misses, and a few surprises along the way. The draft picks are
7-round mock draft from The Athletic sees 49ers fortifying defense early
Analyst Dane Brugler recently revealed his seven-round mock draft for The Athletic, forecasting all 257 selections in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft, set to kick off next week.
"Piecing together a mock like this is time consuming, but I enjoy the exercise, because it allows me to focus on each team's needs, organizational trends and prospect-team pairings that make sense based on '30' visits, league buzz and overall interest," Brugler wrote.
Most expect the 49ers to address the trenches early in the draft, and Brugler has the team doing that. It's just not on the offensive side of the football. In fact, Brugler doesn't have San Francisco
7-round mock draft: 49ers trade up to fortify secondary
The San Francisco 49ers first selection in next week's draft comes at No. 31 overall. However, NFL Media analyst Chad Reuter doesn't have the Bay Area team remaining at that spot in the first round. In his seven-round mock draft, he envisions the 49ers striking a deal with the Green Bay Packers to move up six spots to No. 25 overall, where they select former Alabama cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry.
Reuter notes, "Whether it's for a cornerback like McKinstry, an offensive lineman or a receiver, the 49ers could very well give up a mid-round pick to acquire one of the few missing pieces on an otherwise potent roster."

The San Francisco 49ers hold the No. 31 overall pick, but speculation abounds that they may seek to move before or during the first round of next week's NFL Draft. With the offensive line as a prime target for improvement and the position going mostly ignored in free agency, a strategic trade-up to acquire an impact player could be in the cards.
Alyssa Barbieri proposes such a scenario in her latest mock draft for USA Today's Touchdown Wire. Barbieri envisions the 49ers trading with the Miami Dolphins to move up 10 spots, selecting former Alabama offensive lineman JC Latham.
