Fans List National Anthem Protests as Chief Reason for Dip in Viewership
A J.D. Power survey found that national anthem protests were the greatest reason NFL fans watched fewer games during the 2016 professional football season.

J.D. Power sampled a universe of 9,200 people who went to at least one football, basketball, or hockey game.
The survey found that twenty-six percent watched fewer games due to national anthem protests.
Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick began his protest during the 2016 NFL preseason.
Following a preseason game against the Green Bay Packers,
Kaepernick told NFL Media reporter Steve Wyche, "I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color. To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder."
Other survey results reported by Rovell:
- Twenty-four percent of those surveyed stated they watched fewer games due to domestic violence and other off-the-field issues.
- Twenty percent watched fewer games due to excessive commercials.
- Sixteen percent were more interested in the 2016 presidential race.
- Five percent watched fewer games because they terminated their cable.
Overall, networks that broadcast professional football games saw an 8 percent drop in viewers during the 2016 season compared to the 2015 season. However, the survey also found that 62 percent of people tuned into just as many games as they did during the previous season.

Anthony "Spice" Adams to announce 49ers' draft picks in 2nd and 3rd rounds
NFL Communications has officially announced the "NFL legends and active players" who will announce selections during Day 2 of the 2024 NFL Draft. Representing the San Francisco 49ers will be former defensive tackle Anthony "Spice" Adams, who spent four seasons with the team and nine in the NFL.
San Francisco selected Adams out of Penn State in the second round (No. 57 overall) of the 2003 NFL Draft.

49ers sign WR Trent Taylor, reuniting with former draft pick
The San Francisco 49ers announced the signing of wide receiver Trent Taylor to a one-year deal, reuniting with the team's former fifth-round draft pick out of Louisiana Tech.
Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area was the first to report that the 49ers were discussing a potential reunion with Taylor. The receiver was part of head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch's first draft class in 2017 and spent his first four NFL seasons with the team.

George Kittle's message to Brandon Aiyuk amid contract talks with 49ers: "Be patient"
George Kittle made his sentiments clear in a recent conversation about his teammate, wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. The tight end emphasized that he couldn't picture the San Francisco 49ers without Aiyuk and spoke highly of him in a discussion with Fox News Digital's Scott Thompson.
Throughout the offseason, Kittle has had several conversations with Aiyuk and empathizes with his situation. Reflecting on his own contract negotiation in 2020 before reaching an agreement with the 49ers, Kittle offered his best advice to Aiyuk: "Hey, be patient."

Draft Watch: Western Kentucky WR Malachi Corley visiting 49ers on Wednesday
The San Francisco 49ers are hosting several draft prospects this week as the deadline for pre-draft visits draws near. According to Aaron Wilson of KPRC2, the team will host former Western Kentucky wide receiver Malachi Corley on Wednesday.
Corley is expected to be a Day 2 pick. San Francisco owns two selections on Day 2—the No. 63 overall pick in the second round and the No. 94 overall pick in the third round. Currently, the receiver is visiting with the Seattle Seahawks.
