Yah, but at least we shouldn't be that far away now that we have Crabtree, Davis, maybe Morgan and Staley. Big question mark on Smith and whether or not Baas, Rachel will get better. We do need a backup to Gore cause I don't think Coffee is a featured back and Gore doesn't have that many miles on him. But cross your fingers that McClouphan can draft an impact OT and maybe another G and were right there. The once Raye's gone after next year we can bring in a real coordinator and whala!

I hate to beat a dead horse and I'm not stirring controversy....


All I'll say is that I am encouraged, HOWEVER our success is largely dependent upon the QB position. Whether it's Smith improving or us upgrading, we need decent QB play and we'll be looking at a playoff spot. An O-lineman would help the cause as well.

i just watched the st. louis game again. we were winning 7-6 in the 4th quarter with 9 minutes left

i know it was a blow out at the end, but we let the worse team in the league hang around until almost half way till the last quarter

it was both encouraging & discouraging. encouraging cause the team is talented & can play with any team. discouraging cause the team couldn't finish games. if this team could finish they would've only had two losses & the philly game is debatable after the first int when we silence the crowd & had philly fan worried. the niners couldn't take advantage of the turnover & the momentum.

~ The team was a little better than I thought.
~ I knew we wouldn't make the playoffs.

Unlike the sundry other "building a foundation/turning a corner" seasons we've recently endured, this season's performance seemed to actually accomplish something.

The proof of this can be seen in this year's offf season shopping list. Sure it's still pretty long, but the "critically needed" section of that shopping list is a lot shorter than it has been in recent memory. An optimist could reasonably argue that we're only 3-4 players shy of a significantly better team, ie 2-3 O-linemen and a competent kick/punt returner.

Personally, I'm not that blithely optimistic. It's a rare offseason that allows you to retool your O-line to the extent that we need, however that should not get in the way of the fact that the off season shopping list really is much shorter this year.

While we prefer to measure progress in play off wins and Lombardi Trophies, we've gotta be mindful of where we've recently been. In this light, it's fair to say we've made significant, tangible progress in 2009.

Until the management of this team learns the simple lesson that all winning teams know - intangibles are more important than measurables at quarterback - we will continue to be an also-ran!

I thought we might squeak into the playoffs, or just barely miss em... I think I had us at 9-7, so I was fairly close... However, considering how our offense has panned out, I am leaning towards 8-8 for 2010...

Just compare the level of play and expectations of the current roster and match it up against any other year. To be honest I thought we underachieved this year. In year past we would have had to overachieve to get to 8-8. We are on the right track. VD, Gore, and Crabs are all legit playmakers. I agree with others that much hangs in the ballance with smith. That being said an improvement in the return and coverage games could help us swing some of our 6 losses in the other direction. If Smith takes it to the next level (possible) or we manage to upgrade the QB (not likely) then we won't have to worry about close finishes anymore.

If we can draft a PR and a pair of linemen, (we must find a starting right tackle or a left tackle and move Staley) then we are pretty much ready to compete. I think we will look to find a safety as well. I would take a waiver on any RBs, WRs, or DBs, who are seriously explosive in the return game and can help us stretch the field as situational players on O or D.

Same old 49ers.
