Way back in November, Matt Maiocco of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat foresaw the problem of retaining the Aubrayo Franklin, and wrote that the 49ers "will take whatever steps necessary to keep him around in 2010." The first option is a contract extension, but barring that, they could use the franchise tag. In 2010, a tag for a DT will run a team $7.003 million, and a decision must be made by Thursday afternoon. ESPN's John Clayton had word from a source that the team has already told Franklin he's getting tagged.
But is it still possible that the Niners would trade Franklin before the Thursday deadline? Maiocco tweeted on Tuesday afternoon that "one league source told me he thought 49ers would part ways with Aubrayo Franklin in a trade for one first-round selection." Clock's ticking.
