Not like Nolan could have done anything about the situation. By the time Norv left the 9ers didn’t have time to roll a new offense. Plus no one would bail on their current team like Norv did just a couple weeks before the year. Nolan had one choice to promote within and run the same offense.
Both were in positions they couldn’t handle.

I don't remember the rams game that well from that year, but I remember the Cardinals game. The offense wasn't able to do much at all until the end in the 2 minute drill when they let Smith run the show and improvise a bit, we scored a TD despite the WRs doing their best to make sure we didn't.
^^^^^ YES, YES......and YES!!!

Just watch that segment on NFL network vs. the Ravens, where people are miked up!

One thing I have to give up to Hostler was that it looked as if he was incorporating a spread type of offense a little more considering that's what Alex probably felt most comfortable in.
But then again....nah!

At least we know one thing. Alex admitted he wasn't trying to concentrate too much on fundamentals because he was concentrating more on learning the new system every year.
Alex's dad, you fail at blaming his coaches.

Are you sure no one else was available? Not Ted Tolner? Not someone from the college ranks?
I understand that Turner put Nolan in a bad spot. But Nolan took a bad situation and made it worse. Go ahead and excuse his failure if you want, but the real measure of a Head Coach is what he does in a difficult situation.
A quality coach would've known enough about offense to know that Hostler was unqualified before he hired him.. A quality coach would've had his eye on someone in the college ranks. A quality coach would've had an offensive assistant in the pipeline, ready to take over. That's the great thing about football: there are no excuses. You either deliver, or you step aside. Nolan has stepped aside.

He was worse than everyone remembers. It was the only time I was truly embarrassed to call myself a niner fan.

you were better off if you were honestly blind so you didn't have to watch the Jim Hostler offense which was one of the most painful experiences of my life

How bout when David Bass' snap on MNF went about 13 feet over Alex's head for a safety? That did it for me...
