The Only Jimmy Raye Fan

Count me in as a fan, too, for those same reasons. Maybe we should have a funny Jimmy Raye look-a-like page!

still not enough. his suspect playcalling in the first half screwed us/ put us in way too many holes. then we come back with a vengence in the 2nd half? plus the seattle game was horrid. fank only carrying the ball 9 times. the jury is still out there on raye.

smith did okay, but out of the shotgun, otherwise no improvement. he's still to slow in releasing the ball, no pump fakes. i'd like to see an upgrade on the o-line & a new qb to see what raye has.

Not a fan yet. But he definitely has me in the ballpark and my curiosity is piqued.

I didn't and still do not blame him for the Offensive problems this season he did as well as anyone else could have under the circumstances. Which when you stop to consider that an Offensive genius could only pull a 7-9 record out with this team that 8-8 with a guy who looks asleep at the wheel is pretty solid. Hell at times this season he had this Offense running like Martz never left. Only with a Run game included.

If we take a nose dive for anything other than injury my interest will have waned considerably and I'll be one of the first calling for a change.

One thing at a time. Why get a new QB when we have one already under contract and don't have to sign another with Hill being a serviceable backup as well as Davis sitting and learning behind them both?

A new QB. Geez why don't you just wish for a gazillion dollars while you're at it.

Don't think Alex is our QB of the future, needs to be more consistance for me to belive in him ! If yesterday was anyother team , we would be behind in the first half , oops we were but by 20 or so points cuz of the O couldn't move the ball until the second half !

I think Raye was bound by Singletary's desire for a rushing attack and control of TOP. Too many times, Raye played within the boundaries of what Sing wanted and we found ourselves going into halftime trailing.

Raye is great at making adjustments at halftime. You have to give him credit there.

Also, if anyone knows the importance of having a dominant Oline, it's Raye. He had it in KC and he helped bring in the talent in NY. I expect that Sing and Raye will be in Scot's ear lobbying for him to bring in some new talent to bolster our line.

Just to be clear, you (and the majority of people on this board) are saying an improved Oline will benefit Smith and the rest of the Offense so the unit will be more productive than it was in 2009? If that is the case then fine. I just dont want this to be laying the seeds of future excuses for Smith. I feel like if the line gets fixed and the offense comes out with the same stuff, particularly out of the QB position, there will be a storm of well the Oline needs a season to gel and needs continuity. If we get the line shored up and Smith sucks next season then can we all agree the team needs to move on?

You certainly put Raye's best foot forward and I believe that you are correct; although Raye was a source of severe frustration at various times throughout the season, looking back on the season in aggregate, it's difficult to say that he hasn't been a benefit to the team. Raye's mid-season re-tooling of the team around Smith and the spread, although ugly to watch at times, was an impressive undertaking.

As mentioned above, I suspect that Raye will be a forceful advocate in the refurbishment of the O-line and given his track record, I'd say that our O-line is in competent hands this offseason.

Your animosity toward this response is surprising. Smith has looked like the same ol Smith the last 4-5 weeks. Hill is strictly a short term backup, and who knows what will come of young Mr. Davis.

I don't think requestig a new QB is like requesting a gazillion Dollars, but more like requesting your mechanic use the proper alternator rather then trying to force the wrong part to work. I mean they both charge your battery regardless of fit right?

A better Oline will help the QB, regardless of who that is. It will also help our running game, which in turn, helps that QB. It's all related.

If Smith isn't the guy, then he isn't the guy. He played well this season though, so while I hope he is, but I'm not going to make excuses for him if he plays poorly next season. Mainly though, Singletary has stated that he wants to run the ball. That's the reason Raye was brought in. In order to do so, we need to upgrade our Oline. It's that simple.

You don't need a good QB if you can run the ball and play defense. Sanchez proved that this year. Rothlesburger and Flacco relied on that formula as rookies. Dilfer even won a SB behind that philosophy. That's what Singletary wants, so that probably the direction we're heading and since the Oline has always been the focal point of Raye's offense, I'd expect that that's where we'll start this offseason.

While J-Raye is not flashy, he is a solid OC... He's done what he was brought in to do (match the O to his players strengths). I agree with the OP. Raye has won me over...

The one thing about Jimmy Raye that I absolutely hate is that he goes into a conservative shell, especially with a small lead. I hope the he remedies that for next season, because I think this team has the potential to put up points in a hurry.

Now if we can get someone better than Smith in here.... We can dump Hill, keep Smith as a solid backup, and continue to develop Davis. Unless the coaching staff doesn't think Davis has what it takes to compete on this level. In that case, we should draft a Qb to develop for the future.

Regardless of who the QB is though, we need to fix the O-Line!
