Here is my thing, why do you bring in the Rock to job for Punk? Now, does Rocky need the belt, no. But, really, you let him job to Punk? Why? Where is the logic in that? And who gives a s**t if he isn't on TV every week or the pay per views? Overall, who is going to be the bigger draw/ratings bump as the champ, Punk or the Rock? This isn't rocket science. Who would put more asses in the seats at WM, Punk or Rock? Especially, in the main event? The fans would go ape s**t over a Rock victory. To be sure, the internet wrestling community loves them some CM Punk (I met the guy at WM 25, he is a royal a*****e; in fact, I wasn't the only one that thought so, either), but the larger wrestling fan base loves the Rock.
Because putting the longest reigning champion over a Hollywood "icon" would do that much more for Punk.. the Rock doesn't need wins anymore, and he clearly doesn't need the championship. Not going to argue about popularity, but if WWE didn't have Punk right now they would be in more trouble than they already are..
Totally agree with the notion that the WWE has a problem without Punk. I'm not sure if Punk, frankly, needs to beat the Rock. He needs to beat Austin. That seems more like a true passing of the torch moment. And something that they keep teasing between the two. You never know, it may be that Lesnar attempts to interfere at Rumble, out of no where, Austin comes out stuns Lesnar, stuns Rock, stuns Punk, and drinks a few beers and he is gone. Meanwhile, the match resumes, Rock gets the pin. Punk blames Austin, which leads to a match down the line (possibly this year's mania).
And, I do not agree that Punk is the longest reigning champ; it is a convenient ploy, ala the Ryback nonsense, or cheap trick to generate a negative buzz around him. This is a shame because Punk doesn't need it. Its as if the WWE believes it still has to build him up or something. Build him for what? The man, like him or not, is made. He is an excellent heel, a multiple-time champion, and has beaten the best the industry has. Just because I think he is a major douche, even I have to tell you the guy is must see.
To me, you need to build someone else, build Rhodes, build Ziegler, build Kingston (who had an excellent program with Orton years back--enough of this intercontinental/US champ/tag title b******t), build a new Undertaker/Kane character (its time guys, they are both way up there in age), and move on.
Part of the reason I no longer watch and just read the highlights is because it is the same s**t it has been for years. Granted, wrestling has its swings in popularity, but right now, it is just awful to watch. It should tell you something that they must keep teasing guys from the Attitude era to generate a buzz. Ryback deserves some credit for creating excitement, but just like all of Vince's monsters, he is being brought back down to earth.
