He just has the highest ceiling in the class. I'm not convinced he will be a superstar, he just has the possibility to be the best in the class.

Too much of a risk. He's such a huge project that he progresses the first 3-4 years of his contract only to leave for FA or demand a HUGE contract.

I also think that Austin Rivers has superstar potential as well. I think with the way our team is built, as long as we keep having lottery picks, we need to swing for the fences every time. I'm tired of our front office thinking we are a couple pieces away from being a contender, when clearly that isnt the case. We need to stop drafting players that could be "solid contributers" or "great role players" and start drafting players that have the potential to be elite players. Whether they turn out or not is irrelevant.

If you keep swinging for the fences, eventually you will connect and hit one out.

You think Austin Rivers is a better pick than Harrison Barnes??

What elite quality does Barnes have that separates him from the current crop of superstar small forwards in the NBA?

It's not athleticism, explosiveness, or an unnatural ability to get to the rim. It's not rebounding. It's not defense. It's certainly not his mediocre ball handling ability.

By all accounts, it would have to be his shot making and work ethic. Quite similar to Paul Pierce, no?

Shot-making? That's the #1 reason he fell to #7 in the first place. His below-average ball handling ability makes his ability to create his own shot questionable.

"Without Kendall Marshall, he showed he's not an isolation, one-on-one, create his shot guy. He's more of a spot-up shooter, piece of his puzzle

Barnes playing with an elite passing point guard would have much greater success. I'm not entirely 100% sold on Stephen Curry's ability as a distributor and playmaker.

There's no doubt he comes from the Grant Hill school of well-spoken athletes. But work ethic isn't a tangible skill.

Ive seen alot of Harrison Barnes, and am not impresses at all....reminds me of....duh da duh duh!!!! : Brandon Wright....Same traits as Wright, almost exactly like him...coincidently they both come from North Carolina.

Barnes did horrible without a true PG when Marshall went down in the tourney...hell he was horrible in the ACC Tourney as well...just not sold on him...thats why I said he was meh when you drafted him....

Possibility maybe. Likelihood probably not. He is SO far away from being a real producer that a team may not get much of anything until his next contract comes up and he can leave. Just too much of a risk in my opinion when it was all said and done. Obviously 8 GM's in the league pretty much thought the same thing.

But at that point maybe you can trade such a valuable asset. I'm just curious, where do you see a team like ours with many good pieces, but no superstars?

Its like I pointed out before, you just don't win championships in basketball that way. Not trying to be a hater, it just seems like an impossible hill to climb to be able to beat teams like the Heat and Thunder (which has to be the ultimate goal obviously)

I dont think he is anything like Brandon Wright ( who I actually still like as a role player and shot blocker). He is a much better shooter with more range and a true SF. Wright is an undersized PF whose game is on the inside. Not a good comparison at all in my opinion.

Not sure you are exactly following what I was saying. For our team, yes I would have picked Rivers. Does that mean that Rivers will be a better player than Barnes? No, not at all. BUT, there is a chance that he could be exponentially better than Barnes, and develop into a superstar. I dont think Barnes will ever be a superstar.

With the way the Warriors were constructed pre-draft, I would go with the guy with the better chance of becoming a superstar than the guy that is a safer choice not to bust. Thats just me though.

I dont disagree with you on the need for superstars. I just dont think Drummond is going to be that guy unless he magically changes work ethic, attitude, and develops a real offensive game. Just so many question marks on this kid.

Same thing I have been arguing in the Alex Smith threads for years.

Anyways I am not thrilled with the Barnes pick, but dont hate it at all. I think he will be solid, but I think his ceiling is fairly low. He could be a good rotational player or a low end starter. But, until we land a superstar, we will be stuck in mediocrity. There are a few players that we could have taken at 7 that have the potential to be a superstar. Some of you think we will be a playoff team and that would be great. But the ultimate goal is a championship, and at most this is a one and done playoff team. I dont see this team ever competing for a title the way its constructed and/or in the foreseeable future with this core of players.

You guys werent above .500 last year. There is maybe 1 pick in this draft that would take you guys from bottom dweller to championship contender in a season in Anthony Davis. It would be a huge deal just to make the playoffs-because you're putting yourself in position for a title which is better than sub .500 records year after year.

With Barnes you're solidifying your SF position. And now you guys have 5 young STUDS who could grow into something special.

Now theyre not going to be a championship team over night, but if you give them time and keep adding pieces(maybe upgrading-via packaging players for better players) they could end up being a contender. And that's a lot better than being a crappy team year in and year out.

If the kid didnt have Rivers as his last name would he even gone as high as he did? I never saw "superstar" when I watched him play at Duke.

It seems like the only way to get a superstar if you're not as atrocious as NO was, is to luck into one in the lottery ala the Spurs or Bulls. Seems like a silly way to win a title.

IMO they are the same player, same attributes, and all, the only real advantage is that he can hit the three a bit better...Wright right now has a more developed inside game...and a better defender, but when Wright came out he and Barnes are almost identical...

I might be down on Harrison Barnes, but he's easily a better prospect than Austin Rivers.

I think the point I was trying to make was overshadowed by the fact that I mentioned Rivers name with Drummond.

The point is, IMHO, this team will be stuck in mediocrity until we get a superstar. So until we get said superstar, we need to shoot for the stars when it comes to drafting. We need to take the players that have a chance of becoming superstars/elite players. THEN, drafting Barnes-like players (and acquiring other pieces) will hopefully lead to contending for a title.

Hmm, I see no comparisons whatsoever. Brandan Wright was an undersized 4 and didn't have that NBA ready body upon getting drafted. Like John said, I, too, am still a fan of Wright's. His injury history with us was just too unfortunate. Barnes is a 3 with an NBA ready body. He's a smooth shooter and I feel is much more athletic than Wright.
