As an avid golf fan for all of my life, I view it as the historical version of the majors. Taking it back to the origins. The Masters is my favorite, but I have a lot of respect for the "british"(as it is commonly referred to here) open.

I do think many over here look at it as a lesser event, though.

I agree that the Open is a special event. It is my 3rd favorite golf tourney to watch after the Masters and US Open and enjoy seeing a course that is not the typical US tree lined course. As a golfer, I dream of one day playing St Andrews. I have played Pebble and while I cant imagine a better course or setting I think St Andrews could be a close 2nd.
