Official 2010 Oakland A's Thread

Rough game today.

DLS and Gio weren't that good.

Suzuki and Donaldson HR'ed, that's about it.

Nice more box scores and not actual highlights of the A's two split squad games tonight from CSN.

A's ranked 7th in BP's minor league systems.

Some tidbits...

-Cahill is struggling, if he was the leader in the house at the beginning of ST to get that 5th SP spot, well he's fallen back to the back at best. Mortenson also hasn't done himself any favors as a possible long man in the pen in his early ST.

-Mazzaro who threw 3 scoreless innings today probably has pitched the best out of the three of him, Cahill and Gio to win that 5th spot. I know very early but he's the leader and from all accounts, his stuff looks much better from last season.

-Cust supposedly hit a HR that left the stadium today, some said it's the longest HR ever in Surprise.

-Stassi hit a HR today, then promptly got hurt when a ball hit him while he was catching and probably will miss a week and most likely his next AB will be in the A's minor league camp. Hey, gotta say he's an A's player. Young players so far have had their moments the first week into ST.

Pitching has been horrible so far.

Our actual starters haven't been too bad... it's the guys who won't see regular SP time gettin lit up.

Other than Cahill, every other pitcher who has a chance to be in the rotation has only pitched once so far.

Also Buck didn't play today because of dizziness.

This doesn't help his cause, he did have issues with dizziness last season I think at AAA, this early in ST.

I still don't get what the A's are doing with Buck. They've said they've had many calls in regards to other teams wanting to trade for him yet the A's are staunch publicly that they still believe in him?

I know a lot of A's fans aren't buying that with the way they've treated Buck over the past year plus.

The guy can't stay healthy and when he's healthy he is pretty mediocre in AAA. And then you go b***hing to the media about how shafted you're getting. If you wan't to play in the big leagues stay healthy and let your play do the talking instead of sulking like a little b***h. No conspiracy, no vendetta it's just that Buck hasn't performed. He can't just run on the cottails of a few solid months.

I think Buck can be a good hitter in either league, big question mark is health.

I said previously I thought Buck had the best potential of being a good AVG/power hitter out of the A's young hitting prospects about a year ago.

Course that was after Buck had a good rookie season where he hit .300+ in every month other than April and even though he struggled in 08, he had a monster SEP with a line of .367/.415/.673 with 3 2B/4 HRs/12 RBIs in 49 ABs/12 games.

Basically Buck last year at this time is what Sweeney is this upcoming season for me. A A's young hitter who showed some real promise late in the season that I thought would have a breakout season following.

Course Buck had that one great month of SEP while Sweeney had more of a sample size of the entire second half of 09.

Sweeney is a much better player than Buck so far. Not saying Buck couldn't be as good in the future.

We'll see what happens to Buck.

There are two groups of A's fans, those who still believe in Buck and think he got a raw deal and the other who just doesn't think Buck has it to be a big leaguer, least as a full time productive big leaguer in all likely hood.

Obviously us two are in the different camps.

What I don't understand as I stated previously is why the A's don't deal Buck if there are teams wanting him. It looks at this time that the A's are about done with him, so why let him rot in the A's system, which at this time will probably be AAA and let him free basically as if it's true, obviously there are teams that still believe in Buck's ability.

A's have a handful of OFs prospects who many A's fans have surpassed Buck. Taylor and Carter especially but you got two others who could be in AAA sometime in 2010 and that's Doolittle and C.Brown who had a very good game TUE going 3/4 with 2 runs, 2B RBI, SB, and BB.

Reading up on this Sogard kid who the A's got in the Kouz deal.

Sounds like he could be a sleeper candidate. I know some A's fans have thrown out the Ellis comparison when he was thought to be a throw in during the Grieve-Damon deal before 01 and just a year after the deal, he was essentially the A's starting 2B the moment he arrived with the A's.

Course Sogard has at least two other top 2B prospects in the A's system he'll have to fight against with Cardenas who most likely will arrive first in the bigs as a 2B and then Weeks who I still wouldn't be all that surprised if he was moved to the OF to save him from the physical beating playing the 2B job would do.

Sogard was a 2nd round pick a couple of years ago and has put up some solid #s in SD's system before he was dealt.

Although with him likely to start the year at AAA, along with Cardenas, who plays 2B and whoever doesn't, what position will he play? 3B?
