whether you liked Bonds or not, he was one of the greatest baseball players who ever lived. steroids, no steroids, he knew, he didnt know, whatever. he was a HOF player before he bulked up, hes still a HOF player. he wouldve still been the only player ever to hit 600 HR and steal 500 bases. he was an 8 time GG LF, and a 7 time NL MVP.
so many players used PED's during that era, you cant blame one guy or add asterisks to one person because he was the best, or the most hated.
Bonds NEVER ONCE tested positive for ANYTHING illegal. not once. at the time he took whatever he took, it was a perfectly legal substance. just like greenies, or any other "leaded" coffee, drugs, etc that players had been taking for decades.
if he was a nicer guy, nobody would be trying to crucify him. A-Rod took BANNED substances, tested positive for CHEATING, and since he doesnt tell the media to suck a fat one and walk off, nobody really cares or remember what he did. and hes probably going to pass Bonds before its said and done, and do it without the death threats.
Barry Bonds was the greatest and most feared hitter of his generation. he wasnt even at his peak performance wise in the 90's, and he won the title of baseball player of the decade. being a Giants fan, i watched him everyday. to say that some cream and clear substances directly allowed him to stand in the box and time out pitches like he did, and hit them so squarely, is foolishness.
he got some power benefits no doubt, and definitely the ability to play at a high level longer than normal, but his pure ability as a hitter, and just how great he was at it, deserves to be remembered as such, and not for needles and creams.
his HOF plaque should read "Barry Lamar Bonds was the greatest and most feared hitter of his era. he was a 7 time NL MVP, and broke Hank Aarons all time HR record, the single season HR record, stole 500 bases, and was an 8 time gold glove OF." and if they want to bring up steroids, they can add that he was a controversial player during a era of PED's. even then, if they had to add a sidenote about cheating, every player in history would have something. they didnt say "Gaylord Perry was a great pitcher, but used a spitball to gain the upperhand".
its best if they didnt open Pandoras Box in Cooperstown. let the fans have their own opinions.

Bravo. This is the most brilliant post I've read on this subject to date. You, sir, are a f*cking rockstar.
