AFL update.
-Brown goes 2/4 with a HR/3 RBIs. .348/.412/.761 with 3 2B/2 3Bs/4 HRs/11 RBIs now thru 11 games. Not having the "video game #s" that Desme is putting up but nice way for him in the winter league down in ARZ after he missed a good chunk of last season at AA.
-Desme with an "alright game" compared to what he's done so far thru the first ten games. Today went 1/2 with an RBI, the one hit being a 2B with 3 runs along with 2 BBs/K. K improvement is a good sign. 7 Ks/2 BBs in his first 12 ABs/3 games. Since then, his ratio is at 5 Ks/4 BBs in his last 33 ABs/8 games.

Best case for Desme is a Jayson Werth type hitter for us. 25-30 homers, .260-.270 and 20 steals or so. I think he can be a good supplemental piece for us.

Yeah when thinking of a a Desme, he's come up as best case scenario type of comparison.
Other name brought up is ARZ's OF C.Young. Who before last season, as with many ARZ youngsters other than JUp and Reynolds, C.Young was looked upon as a good young hitter who like Werth and potentially like Desme, has good power but K's a ton.
Question is lets say the A's IF is...
C-Suzuki
1B-Barton/Carter/Doolittle
2B-Cardenas/Weeks
SS-Green
3B-Wallace
That leaves three OF spots for these list of players to fight it out the next few years...
Sweeney, Davis, Cunningham, Desme, Carter/Doolittle, Peterson, Spencer, Barfield.
Course can't leave out DH although I know a lot of A's fans would like to add an established veteran bat although don't know how likely the A's will pay for one of those ala a Delgado/Glaus type.
A lot of speculation on whether the A's should non tender Cust and just part ways. Arguments for is that he's on the wrong side of 30, his offensive production has dipped for the second straight season, and the A's just can't live with his hot and cold streaks anymore as they have in the past. Argument to keep Cust is that he's still a cheap option to have as a DH who can hit you 25 HRs and still get on base and Cust did much better latter in the season compared to early season struggles, maybe due to the speculation that he changed his approach to a more aggressive way.
Anyway back to the prospects, that's a lot of potential depth in the A's system, although not that one superstar elite top 10-15 talent, Carter and or Wallace probably would be the closest thing...but with the bust rate of prospect these days, it's nice to have good depth all around the org so that you aren't relying one a few prospect to fill a few positions on your big league team.

Well Carter has picked up an illness down in Mexico, that's why he hasn't played since the 17th of this month, surprised it would take this long for the news to be released.
I had thought that maybe the Mexican League winter leagues was that short since there hasn't been any updates on Carter for almost two weeks now.
Hopefully he didn't catch H1N1 down there. Just hope he feels alright for next season which you'd think he would since he has 4-5 months before the minor league season starts.

Not the biggest endorsement of Desme here...
www.bleacherreport.com/articles/279384-is-grant-desme-more-than-an-afl-wonder
Although there wasn't much hype around Carter last year at this time and Carter right now is probably a top 30 prospect on most prospect lists.
If Desme can be another Cust with more athleticism/speed and with lower OBP, I wouldn't mind that.
The more likely and realistic scenario would I think be whom I mentioned just yesterday. A guy who maybe hits .270 at best, K's a lot, but has 20/20 potential.
Hopefully Desme can prove his doubters wrong over the next few years.

Desme with another HR today, gives him 10 in 12 games now.
Finishes up the day 3/4, 3 runs, 2 HRs, 4 RBIs.

Not much good news to report out of ARZ today.
Desme took an 0/4, Weeks went 1/4 with a 2B.
Simmons had a solid appearances. So far in the AZL
...12.1 IP, 11 hits, 4 ERs, 4 BB, 6 Ks.
Had a good start, then bad, and now a good start today. Even though his #s overall look decent, stuff wise he isn't really blowing people away. His fastball according to reports is in the high 80s, supposedly it was in the low 90s at his best, and his secondary pitches still aren't great.
He'll be 23 and starting his second full year at AAA in 2010, could you argue this is a make or break season for him at SAC with guys like Ross, Capra, Hornbeck, Leon and a few others creeping up on his heels.
Even in his 1.5 good years at AA, he did miss a whole lot of bats down there and he got hit harder last year at AAA. He still could make it as a big league pitcher, maybe a long man in the pen, but as far as potentially being even at best a poor man's Blanton, he's gonna have show some improvement in 2010 to even labeled that now which is what many A's fans gave him when he was drafted.

Well another AFL update...
-Weeks tearing up up the past week plus. In his last 8 games, he's hitting .565/.739/.697, 10 runs, 4 2Bs, 3 3B, 6 RBIs, 3/3 on SBs in 23 ABs.
-Desme has definitely cooled down. Since hitting his 9th and 10th HR back on the 28th of last month, he's 3/17 with no XHBs and only 1 RBI. The one "good" thing is he has only 3 Ks during that time so at least he's not K'ing a ton during this slump.
-Brown has also slumped. .328/.377/.641 is his AFL line which is pretty good still and he is in the top 5 in total bases with Desme I still believe leading that category this fall.

It saddens me that every year I expect my teams to be good but I dunno how much longer it will be until we are truly good again. I mean is this next year going to be another wasted season?

I think that our pitching staff will be well-served from a full year of ML service. A more "complete" and experienced starting 5 would be nice. BUT, unless one of our young guns (Sweeney, Suzuki, Buck, Cunningham, Penni, or even Wallace) emerge (or reinvent themselves) Day 1 and start mashing Triple Crown caliber #'s...same old Elephants, bro.

Just read a story on yahoo sports that Tim Hudson is close to signing a 3-year deal with the Braves.

I was expecting that sort of a response. It jus sucks so bad we were soo good from 99-06 and we fell off... I wonder when we will contend again... prolly not until our young guys develop

Yea it makes me sad knowing were not gonna compete anytime soon. At least until 2011-2012
