prolly a draft pick

He only had 10 passes defended over the last two years.

I'm not going to evaluate his coverage skills based on only one statistic. Maybe QBs are afraid to throw at him!

Honestly, aside from Sammy Watkins, I haven't watched enough college ball to comment on Loston's (or anyone's) skillset. I just wanted to raise the possibility that we could do something similar to what Arizona did with Peterson and Mathieu. There's a lot to be said for chemistry.

That makes sense, but it still worries me.

You could be right. Maybe the quarterbacks are not throwing at him.

Some numbers for Safeties

Craig Loston SS LSU 6-2 205

In 23 games, Craig Loston had 10 passes defended--6 interceptions and 4 passes broken up.

Jonathan Dowling FS/SS Western Kentucky 6-3 198

In 24 games, Dowling had 23 passes defended--9 picks and 14 passes broken up.

Deone Bucannon SS Washington St 6-1 192

In 25 games, he had 1t passes defended--10 picks and 15 passes broken up.

Jimmie Ward SS Northern Illinois 5-11 192

In 27 games, Ward had 31 passes defended--10 picks and 21 passes defended.

We've had luck with one LSU safety...wonder if Loston could be our guy. He and Reid might be able to draw on some synergies from when they used to play together. Help to offset the destabilizing impact of losing Whitner to FA.

I would be worried about his coverage skills.

All of those #s need to be taken with a grain of salt.

Loston played in the "vaunted" SEC

Dowling played in the Sun Belt conference

Bucannon played in the PAC-12

Ward played in the MAC conference

....While NFL talent is NFL talent you always need to keep in mind if the level of inferior competition artificially inflated their game or were they on a team that was stacked for their conference, regardless of what it was, that kept them from showcasing their skills more.

Yes. The numbers do need to be taken with at least one grain of salt.

The level of competition does need to be considered.

But, there is no denying that Ward did look very good playing with the big boys at the Senior Bowl.

Bailey is more of a LB/SS hybrid. Much rather have someone coverage-centric.

And Smith? Is he just a undersized linebacker? IMO, he's much better than other undersized FSU backers like Geno Hayes or Ernie Sims. I like him alot. He's all over the place when u watch FSU. Just don't know if he can be a legitimate safety.

What about Ryan Clark on a one year rental and we draft a safety to groom? So many possibilities

Smith is 6'3" 218 not a LB but has range to be SS at the next level the guy can cover and a sure tackler I think he fits well

Bailey 6'0" 200 is a good player and a SS at the next level is an option

Can't wait for the combine to determine which position they choose to represent I believe Safety. I do NOT worry about LB playing in college turning NFL Safety Eric Weddle has been a success imo

I hope they DO NOT bring back Whitner. Sure he can hit but he couldn't cover a glove. He is a major liability in deep coverage. I'd like to see a heady veteran at or around Whitner's 2013 salary.

I hope he comes back.

Whitner had a good season.
PFF has Whitner rated as the 6th best overall safety for the 2013 season.
In coverage, Whitner was their 5th best safety. Among safeties, he was second in passes defended.
