Based on the future cap situation -- unless there's a huge increase in the salary cap -- I don't think there's any way to keep Goldson and Bowman without doing something extremely drastic (i.e. cut your're starting QB, or release Frank Gore).
Both of those are unimaginable horrors for me at this point.

how much of a drop off do you feel our team would get if we dropped Alex and Frank? You are saying "unimaginable horrors", but I don't really see it that way.
I love Frank...and he more than anyone on our team deserves a SuperBowl, after we have ran him into the ground all these years....but if for some reason Frank is not there, I think Hunter can do well.

It would be awesome to have the ability to keep both on our D. Baalke hit a homerun on the Bowman pick! He pointed out to the media his stregnths as a LB and how he sliced through defenses untouched. Baalke has good vision and think he can do this again!
IF that doesn't happen, I think it will be because we lose him as a RDFA. He will demand All Pro money and will be the one missing piece for some other teams defenses.
We take the 2 highest draft picks we can get as he will get BIG money elsewhere.
We continue to build for the future as nothing is guarentee for the next year! We will lose others but think we have great depth except at FS. Keeping Goldson gives us something we have been missing since Merton Hanks..... thats going back a bit and Goldson is so much more valuable in the run game. He blows people up!! Been a while since we could boast a safety will coverage skills who can also hit close the LOS.
Goldson has grown and shown it as well. Pay the man.... continue to shore up the offense and find depth or good competition at other positions.

You think the Lions would give up Calvin Johnson for Bowman?

If Willis gets hurt (which happens) we dot have a major drop off because we have another All-Pro next to him. You dump Bowman and bring in 2 nobody's the run D will go to s**t.

Look at the reality, the team is moving into a new stadium in 2014, there will be a Super Bowl to bid for. All those Seat Licenses add up to millions, not to mention the Stadium concessions, which the team owns. Add in the naming rights to the Stadium and the big picture spells Green. With PHD accountants anybody can be fit in the salary cap. Oh, one other thing Bo is one of the two best linebackers in football, guess who the other one is.

It would be crazy to trade him, mostly because we probably would not get fair value in return. At minimum I would want a 1st and a 2nd for him. I've never seen a team give up that type of compensation for an ILB. Even if we found a suitor, chances are those 2 picks will not produce the quality of player that Bowman is. . Bowman is a perennial All-Pro type of player. Those guys don't grow on trees, you have to hold on to them. Willis + Bowman is what makes this defense unique and special IMO.

We have decisions to make on Jacobs, Sopoaga and even Alex Smith. We can probably get to $17 million cap room easily. Restructure a few and we get to maybe $20 million. If we don't retain Alex we could have more. It would depend how this season plays out. But I don't think our cap is as bad as it seems. We can probably keep both Goldson and Bowman.
Also, I find it interesting that you'd cut our starting QB that has a QB rating of 102 to keep a will linebacker...
Defense wins Lombardi's. Always has and always will.

Trading Willis instead would be like the Yankees trading Jeter, but would it make more cold, hard, calculating sense?
.Bowman is 3 years younger.
.Bowman is at least as fast and will stay fast longer.
.Bowman hasn't been banged up as much.
I don't necessarily believe that keeping Bowman instead of Willis is the best idea, but is it not at least discussable, if they would require the same money to keep?
If when Bowman's contract is up he is a superior player to Willis, do we remain loyal to emotional attachment or demand the best player possible and cut Willis?

would teams offer that much given they can wait for bowman to hit the f/a market---a gm could take alot of heat trading for a player who then leaves as a f/a...also ilb isnt considered as valuable position as qb, lt, pass rusher or cover corner...what im getting at, i guess, is that the market for bowman may not be as great as we think

You guys are F'n insane. Whoever said we should trade Bowman should be taken out back and shot. Seriously.
The ONLY reason any of our DB's have success is because of the pressure our front 7 creates. You do not trade an ALL-PRO MLB who has 10 more great seasons for a FS. Never. Never. Never.
The key to our defensive success is to keep our front 7 in-tact.
This draft is insanely deep at safety.
