LMJ is victim to unfortunate circumstances. Where many rookies are at least getting to dress up and get some garbage time carries, the 49ers are blessed with a talented and varied stable of starting running backs. No offense to the Carter references, but this 49ers team is much better at running the ball and has significantly more depth. Who does he supplant? Jacobs is there to be the pounder and Frank and Kendall are the two-headed monster which forms the basis of the ground attack. The #1 rushing attack in the NFL and we're doing it without a scrambling quarterback.
Frank is Frank, which is a guy with some of the best vision I have seen in a RB. His vision alone may enable him to play a couple years longer than most others would because he doesn't rely on pure athleticism as some others do (ie. Chris Johnson).

Now there I disagree with you.
LaMichael will be just fine and he will know the offense backwards and forwards before he gets his first snap. He's gonna get his chance and reporters around the league will say stuff like, "woah, where did HE come from!?!"
Just watch. His time will come.
EDIT: oh yeah...and Dexter was a FIRST round pick.
IF, and that's a big if, LMJ adds some bulk maybe he'll pan out but he didn't look very good in preseason, Dexter at least got on the field with a very talented team!
LMJ may be better suited to slot receiver, ala Kyle Williams, if LMJ could return kicks, we could save money and roster space, by dumping williams and finn, that would be huge for this team, IF LMJ can up his kick return and receiving game.
Kendall is a much more complete back, running and blocking like he is twice his size!
Dexter was drafted to be a Dave Meggett/Eric Metcalf type player, just come in on 3rd downs and return kicks. Roger Craig got hurt in his rookie year so he ended up getting the ball much more than they intended.
The 49ers are much deeper at Halfback than that team was. That team didn't have Kendall Hunter and Brandon Jacobs sitting between Craig and Carter.
LaMichael will be just fine and he'll have a "redshirt" year to bulk up and learn to block.
I truly hope you are correct! I never like to root against the team or it's players. It is my hope that LMJ works out, and can replace williams and Ginn, not because I dislike Ginn, and blame williams for the NFC championship game (okay I blame williams) but because if LMJ, can line up as a slot recover, take few snaps at running back, and return kicks...we will have more space on the roster for depth at OLB, and we will save some cap room.
So yeah, I'm stoked that Kendall is maturing into a real threat. He is a game changer, as a team we need to be looking at a post Frank Gore world, I hope with all our draft picks we find a guy to red shirt until Frank is done. I think Jacobs and Dixon should brush up the resumes as Kendall will make then irrelevant.

YES.
I am on the Kendall Hunter Bandwagon. Gore is about 10% better than Hunter, maybe.
According to Footballoutsiders.com, Frank Gore is the #2 back in the NFL on a per-play basis. Kendall Hunter is #4. (Ray Rice is in-between, while CJ Spiller is #1).

Jacobs is purely insurance.
If Gore goes down 'hard' with an injury, the 49ers DO NOT feel comfortable with Hunter, Dixon, and LMJ carrying the 49ers through the playoffs. you need a veteran back like Jacobs.
That's it.

Yup we go from the #2 YPC RB with a 5.5 average in the NFL to the #6 YPC RB with a 5.0 in the nfl. That's a drop off of .5 yards per carry.
We have the best 1-2 combo back situation in the NFL, imo. Hunter is performing very well, imo.
I think reflects on the o-line and how they are playing.
We can run right, we can run left or we can run up the middle!!! I love this young o-line

Still don't get the LMJ pick. If Hunter is to be the featured back, a better complement would have been more of a power, change of pace guy than a runner like LMJ. And what of Jacobs? So far, a superfluous addition. Maybe they're saving him for the second half of the season? When you don't even suit up your top picks, it does raise some questions, and let's face it, neither of them impressed much in camp and preseason. But I digress; back to Hunter. I do believe he has what it takes to be the featured guy, but with a little more "spell time" than Gore has needed. Not necessarily a platoon system, but definitely using our backup a tad more than we do now. Let's hope LMJ develops into that guy, but I think he needs to add at least 10-15 lbs.

As I was lambasted for saying two weeks ago, Hunter is technically more 'consistent' as a runner than gore. That's because gore has so many runs of 10+ yards.
In other words, Kendall Hunter is more likely to have a carry near his average of 5.0 than Gore is to have a carry near his average of 5.5.

Agreed, but it sucks for Jacobs. I think they should at least bring him in for some goal line situations. He needs a tune up before the playoff's........ Same with the rookies. Jenkins and James need to see the field at some point during the season....... Its gonna be tough with all the talent on this team.......

Maybe in week 16 or 17.
Atlanta basically has a lock on the #1 seed, they only play one team with a winning record going forward and they're undefeated, barring major injury.
So, the #1 seed is locked up. I could see a scenario, sort of like last year, where we have the #2 seed sown up after week 15 or 16.
