Week 7 DVOA Ratings: 49ers back at #1 (but we're inconsistent)

Yeah, that's not a Typo. According to footballoutsiders.com, the San Francisco 49ers are #1 in overall team efficiency (35%) again after dropping 3 spots last week. 5th on offense, 4th on defense, and 23rd on Special Teams. We barely edge out the packers (34.1%), followed by the Giants, Bears, and Broncos (all about 31% total DVOA). ** RED FLAG: 49ers are 30th in game-to-game variance, i.e. we're one of the least consistent teams in football. The 49ers, Jets, and Bills are all about the same in variance, so we're basically the least consistent team. STEP IT UP 49ers - #1 Rushing Offense, #11 Passing Offense, #5 rush defense, #6 pass defense. Alex Smith, #12 QB (roughly tied with Carson Palmer). #11 in QBR. #1 run-blocking O-line, 3rd in short-yardage blocking, #1 in 2nd-level blocking, #6 in downfield blocking. Gore is #2 RB behind Spiller, who is not an every-down back - Gore is #1 in DYAR, 20th in pass-catching (good!) Vernon Davis, #1 Tight End. ** Kendall Hunter, #3 RB in DVOA! Speaking of Special Teams, there aren't huge outliers. The only true outliers are the amazing play of Arizona P Dave Zastudil and the punting unit, and the terrible punt coverage in oakland.

No. 5th. You have to control for who we've played, the down and distance, etc.

No. 5th. You have to control for who we've played, the down and distance, etc.

Doesn't matter. Past 2 games we've given up 100+ yards on the ground.

The Giants had like 60 yards on ground going into 4th. By then game was over and our D gave up a bit.

Or you could blame the game being over, our defense being on the field an inordinate amount of time, etc... does it matter? Excuses are one thing, but facts are another. There's no excusing the entire team for not coming to play, but the fact is, they didn't.

And there is no excusing giving up 100 yards on the ground to RB's back to back weeks.
