2012 TRAINING CAMP THREAD

Things became more competitive between the offense and defense during a night practice at 49ers TC. Following two days of dominance by Fangio's crew, the 49ers offense rebounded to make a number of plays against last year's second-best scoring defense. For starters, SF's starting offense punched in a touchdown from two-yards out in a live, short-yardage goal-line period. Coincidentally, the touchdown came from converted tight end Demarcus Dobbs who was wearing a No. 40 practice jersey. No official word on a potential uniform change, but Dobbs got behind Willis' coverage to haul in a 3-yard pass from Alex Smith in the back right corner of the end zone. -Red zone 7-on-7 work late in practice saw Smith complete short TDs to Williams and Moss against the first-team defense. Williams scored on a slant pattern against Brown, while Moss' score came on a slant route against Rogers.

sounds like a highly competitive camp. I love it.

still think we lack good CB depth.

other than Brock and Culliver as the main two, Cox seems average and then what?

Yeah, good sh*t. The offense responded to the 2 days of ownage by the defense. 'Structured, discipline practices'... where have I heard that before...Ah, yes! Walsh practices. Finally a professional coached team

We have good depth at CB. Culliver and Cox have talent. They just needed time to develop further. In Coxes' case he needs time to regain his development that he lost after his felony charge. That bit about him keeping up with Ginn down field is very significant. He has the DB skills. Was considered one of the better CB coming out of college but he supposedly had low 40 time that dropped him to the later rounds. I'm rooting for both of these dudes because I think they can be very good for us. I'm starting to like Donatell more and more.

uh, how many CB's do you expect us to carry? we have good depth because we have 5 CB's who can play. if our top 2 cb's get hurt then we have a problem but name a team in the NFL who could survive having their top 2 cb's go down

Good to hear the positive impression of Joe Looney from Barrows today. Competition is good.

uh, how many CB's do you expect us to carry? we have good depth because we have 5 CB's who can play. if our top 2 cb's get hurt then we have a problem but name a team in the NFL who could survive having their top 2 cb's go down

lol exactly. An offense uses 5 receivers max, and one or 2 of these get covered by a linebacker and/or safety. You really only need 3 good CBs which we have in Rogers, Brown and Culliver. Brock and Cox are question marks but lets see..

im really pulling for kaep but he doesnt seem to be oulling himself away from scott and JJ they got late reps at 2nd team offense today

I think people are expecting way too much from Kaep at this point. He's exactly where he's suppose to be. First full camp from a guy that came out of the spread in college. Trying to get his head, arm, and feet working together within 3-4 seconds of dropback time to make a good completion and do it consistently. He will get there though.

whats with everyone at camp hanging their pads out of the bottom of the sleeves? Will we be seeing a return of the "Fix my pads" scenerio that we had with reebok jerseys? just out the bottom of the sleeve in stead of the collar.

I think people are expecting way too much from Kaep at this point. He's exactly where he's suppose to be. First full camp from a guy that came out of the spread in college. Trying to get his head, arm, and feet working together within 3-4 seconds of dropback time to make a good completion and do it consistently. He will get there though.

And people are reading way too far into the training camp reports.

Yes, indeed!

Looney hadn't lined up for a single snap this offseason until Friday. But he played extensively with the second-team offensive line today and looked very good. Looney even made a reception - albeit a short one - off a pass that was tipped at the line of scrimmage by outside linebacker Kourtnei Brown.
