First thoughts, I cut Haralson as I did with my first go around, because his salary is too high to keep, wouldn't leave us any cap room to breathe with. I also cut Tolzien, and don't expect him to clear waivers, if so he is brought back for P-Squad. I like Gore and would keep him if there wasn't such a logjam at the position. He started off ok, got hot for five or so weeks, then slowed down about halfway through the season. It was obvious he was hurting later in the season and playoffs. He can't handle the number of carries he used to, he's on the downside of his career.

The biggest thing that set him apart from other starting caliber backs is his pass blocking which Kendall Hunter showed he is fully capable of doing. Brandon Jacobs has been a good running back in the NFL who is looking for his next contract. He's going to be hungry so he's going to run like the Brandon Jacobs of old. I feel those two alone can make up for what you miss from Gore. On top of that you bring LaMichael James into the picture and he provides that electricity that players like Darren Sproles and Reggie Bush bring to the field. In my opinion, a trio of Hunter, Jacobs, and James brings more to the team than Gore taking the majority of the carries.

The only downside Gore has had during his career has been his speed. He's not fast enough to finish off those break away runs. He's always tracked down 40 or 50 yards downfield. We saw a lot of this last year where the 49ers ran a play that was designed beautifully and executed flawlessly with Gore breaking free for the endzone but he gets caught at the 20 or 30 yard line because he doesn't have the speed to finish off the run. If you don't remember any of these think of the Detroit game where Delanie Walker acted as a pulling guard and popped Suh right in the mouth. Gore ran through a giant hole only to be caught from behind around the two yard line. If Hunter or James breaks free on one of those runs, it's a touchdown which the 49ers struggled to get last year. This is the biggest reason I think the 49ers should let Frank go a year too early rather than a year too late.

With all that said, I like Gore and will be completely happy if they keep him but it's my opinion that the 49ers would help themselves more by letting him go this year.

I would keep Kyle Williams over Collin Jones, Will Tukuafu, Rock Cartwright. And u cut Parys Haralson over Eric Bakhtiari ??? No way imo. If Brooks or Smith is hurt, we would be left with rookie Cam Johnson or this Eric Bakhtiari to fill in.

For a team which is contending for a super bowl, I highly doubt they would take that risk. No way.

AB, two things:

Navarro Bowman $780K...Wow, is that ever a clarion call for an extension, and quick, like this yr.

Tolz...what is your thinking on cutting a guy who was NFL ready in SD and came here and looked the same. We cut him and 20 odd teams would be wise to grab him. I have a hard time understanding that one. I know JJ was brot here by Coach. But aside from being a flame thrower, is he really better than Tolz? I also know coach coached JJ at SD in college, so he obviously knows about him, and hence you are probably right. But that sure seems like a strange move( including bringing him here to start with.), Obviously Coach knows something we don't ...and we can't keep 4 QBs,

Nice post. We all love Gore. He's a 49er to the core but that shouldn't exclude us from looking at his "game" objectively. Last year, as Hunter started to emerge later in the year, I started to see Gore drop many more balls, blow blocking assignments, and became slower and slower to hit the hole and finish off his runs. And the one thing ppl have yet to admit is that he's a very poor lateral runner and is incapable of running off-tackle and this has really hurt us and made us one-dimensional, allowing defenses to stack the box with 8+ and run-blitz between the tackles (no threat outside).

I predicted we'd draft a RB high this year and we did. This coaching staff recognizes our strengths and weaknesses...we bring in Jacobs to run in between the tackles and pound teams (ala Gore) and then now hit them with speed off the edges AND inside with Hunter/James forcing defense to unstack the box. I could see us letting him go to but I doubt it...but he's genuinely going to be challenged to the peak and for every carry b/c if not, we've got the horses to keep running w/o his A-game. I also can't remember the last time he was healthy for a whole season. Love HIM but I'm worried about his GAME!

I agree with almost all of the roster moves, but I just can't see how Kendall Hunter is inactive under any circumstance. I see him as a guy that can take over as the main RB by 2014. To go from being a productive rookie to inactive is a real headscratcher. I do understand there is a serious logjam at RB, but I think they keep Byham inactive before they keep Hunter inactive. Any chance we go with 3 backs out there at once?

Bowman is making way way look little for his production, he will be extended soon, hopefully we extend Justin Smith, free up cap space, and then use that and extend Bowman, would be the perfect scenario.

Tolzien I do like, but feel more comfortable with JJ, plus Harbaugh knows him better than anyone else, so I assume he stays based on that. Could be wrong, hopefully if cut tolzien clears waivers and is signed to the PS.

Interesting thought about Gore...but I think he stays. He's the leader of the RB pack and Harbaugh will still look to him for yardage and leadership. I do think some of the other vets will at a minimum get pushed hard to keep their jobs and some may actually lose them. That's an opportunity for cap savings. Just like last year when UDFA's Ian Williams, Dobbs made the team and Tolzien landed on the PS. As each year's gone by, the roster has gotten better and better, so this year it's going to be ultra-competitive and we could see some new faces that could displace vets. The more versatile players are, the better their chances to stick. So, guys like Deante Purvis have a shot...dude's a RB, CB, KR...he can do several things, has speed and good size (5-10, 200). At some point, they'll part ways w/Ginn, because he's really not much of a WR and is more of a specialist. As competition increases, specialists will have a tougher time staying around, as Harbaugh/Baalke look for more versatility.
