We'll never know for sure.....
It's very possible that the pursuit of Manning was there just to try and see what was up. Had Peyton wanted to sign for 3 years/$40 mill instead of $90 mill, a very good possibility they would have signed him.
Once in a lifetime scenario...only a handful of people really know what was up.

Monster, had I been alex I would have been pissed , not to mention insulted. Still, as GM and HC, do you really think that those two shouldn't at least had a chat with Peyton? They had an idea of what he wanted, but until talking face to face did not know for sure what exactly peyton expected. Once all the cards were on the table, all parties involved saw that there was no match. End of story. You seem to know more about what actually happened than do I. I don't think we are crosswise on this, monster. I think it was necessary for our guys to see what peyton wanted and he wanted to see what we had to offer. It didn't match up. And I am guessing Peyton truly DID want to know what Coach thot his best fit was. And i also bet Harbaugh told him. Only person who got insulted here was alex, as would I have been. Unfortunately, that is the nature of life in the NFL..."it's just business" .
Remember tho, Monster, alex had NOT signed his contract. So in a sense, he was somewhat responsible for what happened.
You think they both(B&H) wanted PM. I think they wanted to know what he wanted. I don't think it went any farther than that. A real pissed off QB who was immature, and didn't understand the business end of the NFL would have bolted to Miami, even tho he really wanted to play here....as the starter. I had to give a nod to alex for the way he handled himself, always with actions, never in the news with words. Did alex understand thata B& H had to look into peyton? That's a tougher one. Whatever, it's over, alex is back doing well, signed up, a little extra dough, and he probably always will remember what went down here. He also knows he is on the one best set team to win it all this yr, next yr and several after that. If I were in his shoes, I think that would be a fair amount of solace. Also he knows his guys, Coach and GM, ultimately chose him...for a variety of reasons, which I laid out way back. Teamwise, he was a better fit.

Harbaugh and Baalke were doing Tom Condon a personal favor. ( you honestly think those favors don't catch back on that 2-way street later? ) Bring in Manning... drive up the price from Denver and Tennessee. Once they catch wind of Peyton being pursued by a SB contender like the Niners? Oh yeah... those teams would frantically throw more into the pot. Alex was kept out of the loop on that... later found out, and was irritated by the whole charade. So he went to South Miami to hang out with his boy Reggie Bush and take a look.
Do I know this. Yes, I do. Will I tell you how? Hahaha, f**k no.

Only in the first year. If Manning survives this year, the contract calls for $40 million guarantee in 2013 and 2014.

LOL. People find any excuse to be able to say the 49ers made the right choice.
Peyton Manning on this team means SB FAVORITES - not contenders - for his entire stay. 2-3 Super Bowls later, Kaepernick (or whichever QB winds up taking over) has learned from one of the greatest QBs of all time.

3 people, the principals, know for sure. Almost surely condon, and i don't know if alex had an agent at that time or not. So other than those 4 folks, the rest of us are just guessing. My bet was an information exchange. Others feel it was feelers or an actual offer. But you know for sure when the magic cap # was revealed, it was very obvious 9ers weren't going to get peyton for less than had already been offered elsewhere. I myself wondered if he might take a turn with the 9ers at a low cap # for a shot at the golden ring. But obviously, that was not the case. Going the Denver route is a dead ender. In the end it seems Peyton went after the money where he could have his own way...and he got it. I guess SB wasn't that big a concern to him, unless somebody really thinks the broncos are going to make a legit run at it. No matter how you slice it, when you got a guy eating up 25% or more of cap, it gets harder and harder to retain your good talent and almost impossible to bring in new high end talent. Ergo, 49ers came out of this just fine, cap percentages intact. Baalke and Coach may have gone into this with expectations, but one wouldn't give up the reins and the other wouldn't foul up his well tooled cap. And they were both right.

I admit I was more than a little surprised when it came out that Manning was after the money not the rings. He went right down in my estimation then. Clearly we were only interested if he could be picked up at a reasonable price.
Dude could have had two more rings, and still picked up more dough than most people could ever spend.

Do not think that staying in the AFC was not a big part of his choice. He knows all the defenses. Would not have to relearn them.

Whilst you may well be right, one of the greatest qb's ever should not have been driven by this.
Ego and dollars.

While SF seems like a reasonable choice, Manning would have replaced Smith, who led the team to a 13-3 record. If he had a record of 11-5 next year what would people say? Just one of the many things that could have wandered about in PMs mind.

Id rather see Alex raise that Trophy in Feb than Manning.
How sweet will that be?! He deserves it!
